  • Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson star in a mind-shattering, suspense-filled thriller that stays with you long after the end of this riveting supernatural film. After David Dunn (Willis) emerges from a horrific train crash as the sole survivor -- and without a single scratch on him -- he meets a mysterious stranger (Jackson). An unsettling stranger who believes comic book heroes walk the earth. A haunting stranger, whose obsession with David will change David's life forever.

  • Unbreakable [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • I was initially disappointed with the climax of this film. My heart sank, not so much because of what had occurred in the movie but because I felt that my growing admiration for M. Night Shyamalan had been seriously damaged. The climax felt trite, contrived, and thoroughly unrewarding. I felt for a moment that the things Night's detractors had said about him were true. That is, until I took the DVD out and decided to give what I had just seen some serious thought. After a few minutes the realization sank in: the climax to Unbreakable is the only conclusion it could logically have come to, given everything that precedes it and given the themes it develops. In this way it is nearly on par with The Sixth Sense.

Ostensibly, this is a film concerning the relationship between David Dunn (Bruce Willis), the lone survivor of a train derailment, and Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), a collector and afficianado of comic books. Elijah believes Dunn to be the superhero he has been looking for all his life, the exact opposite of himself, as Elijah has been afflicted since birth with a medical condition which causes his bones to break very easily. The story follows Elijah's efforts to convince Dunn that he is truly a superhero. But in Unbreakable, as with most of Night's films, there are many different stories and themes inter-acting with one another. On the simplest level, it's a story about a superhero, his classic reluctance to attain to his role due to a quiet humility and a lack of selfish ambition. It's also a love story, and, as is typical with Night's masterful storytelling, there are several love relationships being examined: father and son (Dunn and Joseph), mother and son (Elijah and his mother), and husband and wife. Intertwined with that there is a story of frustration, anger, resentment, and evil. Since this is a film about opposites, there are equal glimpses into the workings of good and evil, and the various types and magnitudes of both. On the side of the good we see the common love of parents for their children, the sacrifice of a promising career and great success for the sake of romantic love, and the selfless intervention at the scene of a horrendous crime to save the innocent. On the side of evil we see petty theft, barbarous torture and murder, and calculated, catastrophic massacre.

I could go on and on about the possible themes treated in this amazing film. The one that really jumped out at me is the old argument between Freewill and Determinism. How Elijah Price comes to be the person he is is brilliantly executed, especially in a flashback scene where his mother entices her son to go outside and get a gift she has left for him on a park bench. The gift turns out to be a comic book, and Elijah's mother tells him that she has bought a bunch of them. So Elijah is rewarded for his virtuous effort of going out into a dangerous world by acquiring access to a fantasy world where heroism and virtue are delineated with vivid clarity. But being the intelligent child that he is, Elijah also sees that for every hero there is a villain, for every act of good, a contrary act of evil; for every good thing, a bad thing: a balance. It is not for nothing that when Elijah opens the gift the comic book is upside down. He will see things upside down at another point in the film, and there is a strong thematic purpose behind it, as there is a strong thematic purpose in his interest, even obsession, with comics.

What has this to do with freewill versus determinism? A lot. Was Elijah's personality mapped out for him by his initial circumstances? Certainly his medical disability is not his choice, but to what extent does the vulnerability and weakness caused by that disorder effect his character, his life choices, his destiny? Some would say a great deal, others would say his choices were entirely his own despite the disadvantages he was beset with. It's a huge ethical issue which goes far beyond the parameters of a simple superhero flick. And it's an issue which in bygone days I thought I was decided on, but which now leaves me entangled in doubt and wonder.

Unbreakable is also a study in the struggle for identity and sense of purpose, and in this respect it has something in common with the later film, Lady in the Water. Unbreakable is a darker film, but ultimately, no less hopeful.

Can't believe I sat through this thing - Cinnamon Girl - Studio City, California USA
I like the actors, so I sat through this for their performances and I kept thinking something in the story would make it worth it. Sadly, I was wrong and that's a chunk of time I can never get back. Awful. Lame. If it was an option, I'd give negative stars.

I love comic books and I love a good movie, but why make this movie? what was the point? Samuel L.Jackson is awesome and I certainly can't wait to see him In S.H.I.E.L.D. Bruce Willis is a good actor, but this movie seemed like it was for fans of the terrible and Thank God Canceled Tv Show Heroes. So Implausible typical of M.Night(I did Like Signs). The end was a curve ball and that's good, but to get to this was at times boring and made you wonder what you were watching.

  • FANTASTIC EFFECTS!!!

However, I DON'T recall Johnny Blaze being Elvis Presley or even a somewhat retarded acting Elvis Presley.

I like Nic Cage but seriously a lamo adaption.

And what was that stupid line "...any man that would sell his soul for love..." WTF???

All that glimmers is not gold.. - Killer Potato -
The special effects are quite excellent.. But..

If you paint a turd gold you still are left with a gold colored turd.

Anybody who read the comics should be insulted.. anybody who didn't probably should feel that way as well if only due to the lack of any real acting by a rather good cast of actors most of which have enjoyed in other films.

    Personal Note/Whine:
Worst part of this movie for me was seeing what they thought was Blackheart.. They took the son of the Devil of the marvel universe and cut off his balls.. at least they didn't make him sparkle when exposed to sunlight and give him a boy band make over.. no... wait.. I guess can only be glad they didn't make him sparkle and did a decent job with the eyeliner...

  • A weak movie saved by the finale - Ashtar Command - Stockholm, Sweden
"Ghost Rider" is an action movie starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, a good guy who by mistake sells his soul to the Devil (called Mephistopheles in the movie). With the help of supernatural powers, Blaze morphs into Ghost Rider, the Devil's own bounty hunter. Strangely, he can use the devilish powers for good ends, something that eventually enables him to turn on Mephistopheles himself.

The movie is quite weak, as movies based on comics tend to be. The plot is illogical at times. "Ghost Rider" is saved to some extent by the dramatic finale, where Johnny Blaze confronts Blackheart, a fallen angel who has come to create Hell on Earth.

Most of "Ghost Rider" only deserves two stars, but because of the ending, I give it three.

A weird fact: when I watched this film on Swedish TV, all cable channels suddenly went off line in my neighbourhood, immediately before the rider's last stand with Blackheart! Creepy. Is Mephisto watching us, or...?

For a simple chick flick, excellent. - G. Bartholomew -
I went to see the movie in the theater. Obviously, it wasn't my choice. I saw the previews several times. Didn't expect any surprises. Just trying to get points.

What I got was an excellent tour flick, several good romances. Very likeable characters. Simple enough for children to follow, yet complex enough for even the most analytical. OK. Some of the character evolutions were less than true to life.

But I would watch it again. In fact, my wife insists on buying it.

  • The story of Fisher Willow, a Memphis débutante daughter of a plantation owner with a distaste for narrow-minded people and a penchant for shocking and insulting those around her. After returning from studies overseas, Fisher falls in love with Jimmy, the down-and-out son of an alcoholic father and an insane mother who works at a store on her family's plantation. She tries to pass him off as an upper-class suitor to appease the spinster aunt who controls her family's fortune, but when she loses a diamond, it places their tenuous relationship in further jeopardy.

Based on the long lost screenplay from celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof)!

  • "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond"

Something Old and Something New from Tennessee Williams

    Amos Lassen

It has been a long time since we have heard from Tennessee Williams and that is because he has been dead for quite a while now. Recently the script of "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond" was found and a movie was made and we have a new Williams production with the same themes for which he was so famous. His voice has called to us across the years since his death and in "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond" is a prize with a wonderful performance by Ellen Burstyn as Aunt Addie but more about that in a few.
Fisher Willow (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a disliked Memphis debutante in the 1920's. She loves to shock and insult those around her and has no patience for those with narrow minds. When she returns from Europe, she falls in love with Jimmy Dobyne (Chris Evans). The son of an alcoholic father and an insane mother and he, himself, is down on his luck. She attempts to tell her spinster Aunt (Burstyn) that he is from the upper-class as her aunt controls her family fortune. But then she loses a family heirloom, a priceless diamond earring and a series of betrayals and accusations begins that could ruin her future. This is a story of seduction and loss set against the old South and is typical Williams fare--soft summer nights, the river, rich Southern girls, a poor honest boy, drug addiction, etc.
Burstyn as Aunt Addie plays her part from her sick bed while at the same time a debutante party is going on downstairs. She calls Fisher to her room and asks her to give her pills that will take her life. Downstairs is Jimmy, a good-looking guy that Fisher has hired to bring her to the party. His family has fallen on hard times and Addie senses that not all is going well on their date and she has discovered that Jimmy did not want to kiss Fisher and Addie suggests that she return to Europe where she can be free.
Howard as Fisher plays an impulsive, emotionally unstable heiress recklessly defying the hidebound conventions of 1920s Memphis high society. She is a typical wounded Williams angel but without the tragic dimension of Williams' greatest creation, Blanche DuBois. "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond" is significant but not a great look at reclamation and redemption.
Fisher is rebellious, so much so that she cannot fit comfortably into any social niche. She studied at the Sorbonne, dabbled in painting, and flitted through European bohemian salons and she is a conspicuously cosmopolitan presence in the provincial kind of Southern society that Williams views with contempt. Her family name has suffered because several tenant farmers drowned in a flood that was caused by Fisher's father when he wrecked a levee. Cornelia (Ann-Margaret) controls the family fortune and she has left Fisher know that she will inherit nothing if she doesn't settle down and marry respectably.
Most of the story takes place at a Halloween party where Fisher loses an earring worth 00 and had been lent to her by Cornelia.
Like in other Williams' works, the cast is replete with dreamers and poets who wander through life never finding their places and they are always misunderstood.

A Bejeweled Masterwork - Brian Morgan - New Orleans
Tennessee Williams is the heart, mind, and voice of the South, and Jodie Markell has made an extraordinarily beautiful film of his screenplay, "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond." Exquisite in its detail and dramatic force, the director does not shy away from Williams's view of a rotting, decadent, romantic Gothic Southland. And in Bryce Dallas Howard (with alabaster skin and raven-black hair) and Chris Evans, she has possibly the most handsome cinematic-couple since Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift in "A Place in the Sun." This film is a great achievement, not to be missed.

  • Verdi: Aida [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • I was eager to see this production because it is directed by Graham Vick, an opera director whose work I almost always admire. Overall, I liked a lot of his ideas (but then I was disposed to), however, there were also some problems.

The "lake stage" at Bregenz is a strange venue, and difficult to film properly, I think. The orchestra is actually playing its part in a building nearby, while the singers listen to the orchestral part piped in through speakers and sing into little headset microphones that they wear throughout the performance. Performance starts at dusk and soon it becomes dark enough for the spectacular and very large sets to shine. Because the stage is so huge, directors sometimes put a lot of funny extra stage business all around the margins--which might work in person but is distracting when the video director tries to capture it all. The video director here in this Aida makes the mistake of trying to encompass everything and not going in for enough closer shots (Aida is a human drama after all). I don't want extreme close ups, but a waist length shot once in a while is good. Overall, the camera movement is often incoherent and you can't even really tell where the principles are on the scene sometimes.

Another important note: the performance is VERY heavily cut. Apparently, festival goers at Bregenz have to get out of the performances by 11:30 (or some time) in order to catch the last city trains and buses, and they don't run very late...so they cut the score for longer operas to fit, and they don't have an intermission.

The production itself: Giant statue of liberty in ruins...Amneris leads around two men who crawl around on the ground as she holds their leashes, and they have black hoods on like the torture victims in the photographs from Abu Ghraib...There is lots of Abu Ghraib type imagery throughout. Amneris's room at the beginning of Act II is a sort of disco with all of her friends a bunch of rich girls manhandling guys who are prisoners in those black hoods again. The triumphal march is unconventional as well: a group of American (?) soldiers dance with some girls and then break their necks in unison at the end of the dance. One interesting idea is that Radames dies right after the judgement scene, and the final scene is played out on a sort of "boat of the dead" as he and Aida leave the earth; the boat is lifted high into the night sky as they sing their duet. There were some other similarly creative and nice touches to the production, but it was highly political and modern so be warned.

As far as the singing and acting, it was only okay. Tatiana Serjan and Iano Tamar as Aida and Amneris were really good actresses (when the camera got close enough for us to see), but vocally not really special. The Amonasro was not powerful enough in his voice and his legato was not good enough for this character's big moments. The Radames was kind of a nonentity--not much voice, and not interesting on stage.

Overall, I am glad I got this because I like Vick's ideas--but it should not be your only version. My other favorites are the Zefferelli production from Busetto with Aldrich/Piper/Aaron--a cast of young unknowns who act and sing very well in a spectacular production (with a smaller orchestra than usual in a very, very small theatre), and the Robert Wilson production from Belgium with Fantini and Berti--strange but moving and effective for me.

More pain for suffering Aida - Gustav - Rockville, MD United States
I do not consider myself an ultra conservative opera fan. I enjoy innovative ideas and minimalist staging. I can accept certain liberties from directors who move the original story to alternative contexts. It is not the excess of liberties the worst in this production (and liberties there are at discretion!): it is just the poor quality of the outcome. This production does not suggest new ideas or a different approach to the story of suffering Aida; it is just excentric for the sake of excentricity. I am not advocating for the missing elephants during the triumphal march, but the awful choreography in this production does not add much attractive. I miss the good singing, the good acting, the beautiful staging and even the good dancing. The principals are simply not up to the demands of their roles or their singing is frankly irregular. The use of microphones in an open space may have something to do with this, but in any case we are not in presence of impressive singers. Save your money and go to the very traditional but still unmatched Met production of the 90s (Levine, Zeffirelli, Domingo et al). If you are not a Zeffirelli fan, wait until the Muti production (with Valayre and Cura as principals) is released, if ever.

  • A generation began in his backyard…From Academy Award®-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) comes Taking Woodstock, the comedy inspired by the true story of Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin) and his family, who inadvertently played a pivotal role in making the famed Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the happening that it was. When Elliot hears that a neighboring town has pulled the permit on a hippie music festival, he calls the producers thinking he could drum up some much-needed business for his parents' run-down motel. Three weeks later, half a million people are on their way to his neighbor’s farm in White Lake, New York, and Elliot finds himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life–and American culture–forever.

  • I happened to recently find this movie on my On Demand cable service. I had not ever heard of it.

I'm a HUGE fan of 1969 WOODSTOCK, (have Collector's Edition of DVD). I have always felt I was born in the wrong era--I should have been there! (To me, there is really only ONE REAL Woodstock.)

I knew some of the facts in the movie Taking Woodstock, but it was AWESOME to see it put together and done so WELL!

I love the portrayal of Elliot, whom I perceived as the main character. I saw this as also a "coming of age" film, from his point of view. He was amazingly brilliant at such a young age and to make such excellent "business/promotion" decisions that had to be made under pressure.

It is *totally* a "feel good" movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to own the DVD!

    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

In my opinion, the best review here on Amazon about the movie is by James Lossing (it should be the top review) so be sure to read it!

I love this movie. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have my own copy. I love how the movie shows the behind the scenes view of what took place to bring Woodstock to life. I think the actors were brilliant. All the different kinds of characters were great. If you were old enough to remember when Woodstock happened, you will want to see this film. If you weren't, you will want to see what the fuss was all about. There will never be another Woodstock. It was a one time thing. This movie makes it possible for all of us to experience a little part of it.

  • Visually Stunning - Todd and In Charge - Miami, FL
There are so many wonderful and insightful reviews of this overlooked charmer there is little more to add.

But I did want to emphasize the brilliant visual technique of Ang Lee and how well it works with the story and setting of the film.

From the opening sequence, which features bright beautiful purple wildflowers, to the end (with hippie visionary Lang on a white horse, set against an open blue sky), Lee does a fabulous job creating visual cues for this singular coming of age story set against the backdrop of an epic cultural coming of age.

I loved the split-screen, loved the colors of the clothing Demitri wears, the composition of the scenes of Woodstock at night, the psychedelics, the organic "feel" to this film -- it all works.

Thanks for bringing this story so brilliantly to life!

  • It had the opportunity to be a great film, and it was wasted - Eric S. Kim - Southern California
Back in the year 2000, Disney released a CGI-animated film simply entitled Dinosaur. Costing over a hundred million dollars to make, it combined real-life settings (Venezuela) with computer-animated characters (dinosaurs). There were no cavemen involved, only the reptiles. The trailers for this film led us to believe that this would be a groundbreaking achievement in computer animation. Well, the CGI looks great, but the film itself is a bit of a disappointment.

But first, we've got to talk about the look and feel of this film. I have to admit that the CGI dinosaurs look fabulous. Every single character is extraordinarily detailed. The meteor sequence looks disturbingly beautiful. The special effects really do look amazing. Add in some fine cinematography and a mesmerizingly haunting music score, and you've got a great-looking film. So what's so disappointing about Dinosaur? If you've seen The Land Before Time, then you'll see some similarities. Several elements of the plot have been borrowed from Don Bluth's 2D-animated film, such as the search for a piece of land that has been untouched by a cataclysmic disaster. We've seen this sort of story before in many other movies. Then, there's the moral lesson of not giving up and cooperating with each other to avoid a more personal catastrophe. There is very little originality in this plot. Even a line of dialogue from The Lion King ("Lions eat guys like us!") has been borrowed. Next is the film's unsatisfactory screenplay. I don't think I have ever heard such preachy, and cutesy, dialogue before in a Disney film (whether animated or live-action). I know this is supposed to be a family film, but the characters all sound like they're either teachers or students. I mean, the themes this film focuses on are always analyzed, which ruins the overall movie experience. Lines such as "it's your choice, not your fate" can be easy evidence of this. And I also have to mention that the dialogue can also be juvenile at times? This isn't Sesame Street, and it shouldn't sound like it's from Sesame Street. Adults should be immersed in this, too. There are, unfortunately, other flaws: formulaic comedic sidekicks, clichéd antagonists, and the sentimental happy ending make the film it worse.

Disney could have done a much better job with Dinosaur. It could have had a solid story, solid writing, complex characters, and a much better tone. What we've got instead is a case of style-over-substance. Now, I will admit that I admire the look and feel of the film. The CGI animation, the music, and the cinematography are the things that keep me from grading this movie lower than a C-. Unfortunately, everything else keep me from grading this higher than an A-. Dinosaur deserves a C, and it could have been so much better.

    Grade: C

  • Torchwood: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Torchwood, is as the product editorial says is a spin off of Doctor Who, but unlike most spin offs, you do not need to watch or follow Doctor Who to watch it as it is truly self-contained.

Torchwood is kind of like the the British version of X-Files, if it was created and aired by HBO. Basically that means that there is a lot of stuff that has been touched on like same-sex relationships and romance to affairs, but at the same time never leaving the scope of the plot, so you are not bogged down by these scenes. Every episode is basically contained with in themselves so the story lines does not really follow each episode. There are the exceptions like with the two part episodes, or when they have to bring back something to help bring a story around.

Overall I will give this 10 out of 10 and can not wait for season 2 to come out on Blu-ray (Come-on BBC release Season 2 on Blu already).

I also would recommend that you watch this 10 episodes of Doctor Who, as it gives some more insight of Capt. Jack:

Great fun, adventure and philosophy - Bronwyn P. Noble - Madison, Wisconsin
First of all, I have to say that one of the reasons I love this series is Captain Jack. And I don't care whether John Barrowman is gay -- he's a hell of a hunk. And love is more important to Jack than sex (although, in the second episode, we find out that he'll bonk anything that moves). For anyone who doesn't know it, this series is a spin-off the the newest Dr. Who series.

But, there are other things, too. The fact the series (1) isn't set in space; (2) not set in a big city (Cardiff is about the same size as the city I live in) and (3) Barrowman and his co-stars make the stories feel real.

The characters live and die. They have real lives that we learn about, which makes us understand them more fully. There is laughter, loss, powerful stories and stories that can keep you on the edge of your seat (even if it is an uncomfortable way to watch anyone).

I am furious that the series has been cancelled because I wanted it to go on for a long time, even though Jack find a gray hair. If you have not seen the series, hit that purchase button fast. Torchwood - The Complete Second Season

  • Master filmmaker Quentin Tarantino presents HERO -- starring martial arts legend Jet Li. This standout Special Edition, remastered and including an exciting new bonus feature, is a visually stunning epic where a fearless warrior rises up to defy an empire and unite a nation. With supernatural skill -- and no fear -- a nameless soldier (Jet Li) embarks on a mission of revenge against the fearsome army that massacred his people. Now, to achieve the justice he seeks, he must take on the empire's most ruthless assassins and reach the enemy he has sworn to defeat. Acclaimed by critics and honored with numerous awards, HERO was an Oscar(R) (Best Foreign Language Film, 2002) and Golden Globe nominee.

With sensational, nonstop martial arts excitement supplied by the acclaimed choreographer of THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, IRON MONKEY is the spirited tale of a mysterious and mythical Chinese legend -- now with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In a desperate and unjust land, where government corruption rules the day, only one man -- known as the Iron Monkey -- has the courage to challenge the system and fight back. Under the shadow of night, in the silence before dawn, he fights to give hope to the poor and the oppressed. Although no one knows his name or where he comes from, his heroism makes him a living legend to the people -- and a wanted man to the powers that be. Presented by Quentin Tarantino -- it's the exhilarating action adventure critics everywhere have called one of the greatest martial arts films of all time

The action legend himself -- Jackie Chan (SHANGHAI NOON, RUSH HOUR) -- explodes across the screen on Blu-ray Disc in a power-packed adventure that critics agree captures some of the most incredible action stunts ever. when the British government is discovered smuggling precious Chinese artifacts out of the country, folklore hero Wong Fei Hung (Chan) uses his uniquely outlandish style of martial arts -- Drunken Boxing -- to fight the conspirators and salvage the valuables before it's too late. And the more Hung drinks, the more agile he becomes -- able to fend off numerous attacks with unbelievable moves. With Chinese treasures and family pride on the line, Hung steps up to every challenge. It's a fun and unstoppably entertaining hit in Blu-rayHigh Definition.

Inventive and bold, this film shines with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In an empire ruled by fear, the people's only hope is the ultimate weapon: Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano) -- a blind, nomadic samurai whose sword has made him a hero and whose courage has made him a legend. Determined to help the desperate residents of a village, Zatoichi seeks justice through revenge. It's a wildly entertaining film that's even more brilliant in Blu-ray High Definition

  • The Red Shoes, the singular fantasia from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (Black Narcissus, The Small Back Room), is cinema’s quintessential backstage drama, as well as one of the most glorious Technicolor visual feasts ever concocted for the screen. Moira Shearer (The Tales of Hoffmann, Peeping Tom) is a rising star ballerina romantically torn between an idealistic composer and a ruthless impresario intent on perfection. Featuring outstanding performances, blazingly beautiful cinematography by Jack Cardiff (Black Narcissus, The African Queen), Oscar-winning sets and music, and an unforgettable, hallucinatory central dance sequence, this beloved classic, now dazzlingly restored, stands as an enthralling tribute to the life of the artist.

  • The Red Shoes (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • The Red Shoes has been painstakingly restored over the course of two-and-a-half years where it was finally unveiled at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It's safe to say the film has never looked or sounded better. One of the true classics of cinema has been preserved for future generations to study and enjoy. For a landmark film such as The Red Shoes, the Criterion Collection has gone that extra mile in the extras department.

The first disc features a "Restoration Demonstration" as Martin Scorsese takes us briefly through the process of restoring The Red Shoes and just how challenging it was to do. He shows a clip from the damaged original and how it was restored digitally. The restorers did an amazing job on this film and the proof is in the final results.

There is an audio commentary by film historian Ian Christie and interviews with stars Marius Goring and Moira Shearer, cinematographer Jack Cardiff, composer Brian Easdale, and Scorsese. The veteran director talks about the use of colour and how it drew him to the film. Cardiff talks about how he got involved. Initially, he hated the ballet but soon grew to love it. Goring talks about the blend of fairy tale and reality in the film. Unlike Cardiff, Easdale was a long-time fan of the ballet and speaks of the origins of the music. Shearer says that she took some convincing because she was enjoying a successful run as a dancer and found the film's script dreadful. This is an excellent track that covers all aspects of The Red Shoes.

"The Red Shoes Novel" features actor Jeremy Irons reading excerpts from the 1978 novelization of the film as you're watching it. He has a great voice which really enhances the prose.

Also included is a theatrical trailer.

The second disc starts off with "Profile of The Red Shoes," a 25-minute retrospective documentary. It starts off giving some background to the genesis of the film and takes us through its production with surviving crew members sharing their memories and relatives of those who died recounting stories as well. This is an excellent look at how The Red Shoes was made.

Legendary film editor Thelma Schoonmaker is interviewed at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. She had been married to Michael Powell from 1984 until his death in 1990. She talks about the film's restoration and also comments on what the film means to her. She speaks quite eloquently and very knowledgeably.

Also included are six stills galleries covering the cast and crew, behind-the-scenes in London, Paris and Monte Carlo, deleted scenes, and production and costume designs.

"Scorsese's Memorabilia" is a gallery of items from the filmmaker's personal collection. It's quite impressive with things like the red ballet shoes worn by Shearer in the film, and posters and lobby cards from various countries.

Finally, there is "The Red Shoes Sketches," a collection of production designer Hein Heckroth's original colour storyboards animated and set to Brian Easdale's score. You can view them on their own or as a side-by-side comparison to The Red Shoes ballet as seen in the film with an optional audio track of Jeremy Irons reading excerpts of the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

Faulty Disc 2 - Wally Fay - New York City
The film itself (Disc 1) is wonderfully restored & all the extras on Disc 1
are interesting. However, on Disc 2 the documentary on the making of "The Red Shoes" could not be accessed on my DVD player, only on my computer. All the
other features could be accessed.I returned it to Amazon & they promptly sent me a replacement. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. Beware this flaw.

Set in the UK in the present day, the team use scavenged alien technology in a very real world to solve crime; both alien and human. Separate from the government. Outside the police. Beyond the United Nations. Everyone who works for Torchwood is young, under 35. Some say that's because it's a new science. Others say it's because they die young...

  • Torchwood: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • I love TORCHWOOD. It's great writing, direction and acting, combined with amazing effects. I am a huge fan of Davies' world--his DOCTOR WHO series is just tremendously fun to watch and this spin-off is just as captivating. In Season 2, Captain JAck and his crew go through a series of much more emotionally complex territory and along the way there are some nasty shocks and surprises, which keep you on the edge of your seat. I love the brilliant cast. Barrowman is simply adorable in the role of his life and everyone else is equally on par with the handsome lead. If you enjoy the new DOCTOR WHO, then this show is well worth your time! And on BLU RAY, the show looks and sounds even more amazing!

Same great storylines, much better production values - Kevin Campbell - Seattle, WA, USA
I'll assume you're considering this because you've watched Torchwood when it was broadcast on BBC America. So here's the stories you enjoyed but: with great picture and sound quality and without the censorship - all the dialog as the writers intended :-)

    A no-brainer if you're a fan of the series.

Dragon Wars reveals every last detail of Earth's greatest battle, a war you'll only believe when you see it for yourself.

  • Dragon Wars - D-War [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • I thought this movie was a great movie despite everyone saying, "the story is stupid!" "The acting is horrible!" Well I just have one thing to say. The stories in other movies aren't any better. In fact, being a great lover of Oriental legends, fables, and culture, I believe that the story is great and beats anything I've ever seen in any of the Blockbuster Mega-movies. The effects are great, the acting is okay, but everything else is amazing! I like good stories, dragons, and good effects. This movie is for those who are tired of laughing at science fiction/fantasy movies and want something that would make anyone who truly appreciates good story love this movie.
Oh, and to the guy who thought this was supposed to be a comedy because of the parallels to movies and the scene (which was hilarious) when the main "human" antagonist gets hit by a car twice, this movie has funny scenes, just like The Lord of the Rings, Jaws, the Jurassic Parks, and any other good movies. As for the parallels, maybe they just wanted to show a large army of dragons and weren't thinking about parallels. Plus, it's hard to think of breakthrough ideas when almost everything has been done already.
In conclusion, this movie was entertaining, and is actually one of my favorites!

Dragon Wars - Mark J. House - USA
Godzilla meets Buddhist mysticism in this movie. If you like Godzilla movies, this is a shockingly good movie(Godzilla does not appear in it) and is most similar to the giant Japanese monster movies. Very good effects, graphics and animation with excellent acting make this a surprisingly good action/monster movie.

  • Region All Blu-Ray pressing. In this action thriller from director Michael Bay (PEARL HARBOR, ARMAGEDDON), survivors of global contamination live in a sterile, self-contained world where their every move is monitored. The rules are easy: be pleasant, refrain from asking questions, and don't rock the boat. Everything they need is provided for them, from the white uniforms that magically appear in their closets, to their customized cafeteria-style meals. The survivors all eagerly await their big payoff: winning the lottery and being sent to The Island, the only remaining untainted land in the world. But Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) yearns for more from his life and begins to wonder what really lies outside the thick walls. When his best friend, Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), wins the lottery, he knows that he has to find out the truth about their world before she departs. What he finds is terrifying enough to send Lincoln and Jordan fleeing from the facility to the real world where they quickly discover that they are clones, and that both The Island and global contamination are a ruse. The clones sole purpose is to be harvested for replacement parts when their sponsors need them. With his business now in jeopardy, Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean), the founder of the cloning company, hires a crack team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) to track down his escaped product. Wild chase scenes through Los Angeles circa 2050 are punctuated by high-tech transportation as Lincoln and Jordan run for their lives

  • Island [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • 2005's Sci-Fi thriller "The Island" features Ewan McGregor as Lincoln Six-Echo and Scarlett Johansson as Jordan Two-Delta, residents of a high-tech facility in which "special" humans are sheltered from "contamination" in an unseen outside world. The residents lead a simple regimented life like overgrown school children; their health, diets, and activities are closely monitored, and they are discouraged from asking questions.

Lincoln Six-Echo develops an unhealthy curiosity in the outside. On a fateful excursion through a service tunnel, he discovers the residents are "product", living tissue banks paid for by wealthy clients of a bio-tech corporation. He and Jordan Two-Delta make a break for the outside, just ahead of ruthless armed mercenaries sent by the head of the corporation (Sean Bean in full-on doctor with a god-complex mode).

The long, breathless escape sequence at the core of the movie is filled with exciting stunts and astonishing special effects. The struggle of Lincoln Six-Echo and Jordan Two-Delta to adapt to an unfamiliar world is the source of some humor and a touching bonding experience. Their escape will, however, lead them to tough choices.

"The Island" gets off to a slow start before going into stunt overdrive. This reviewer wishes two superb actors had spent less time running and been given more time to explore. "The Island" is highly recommended as an interesting, exciting and entertaining sci-fi movie experience.

great film, but what's with the price?!?!?! - Jay - USA
I really enjoyed this film and it looks fantastic on blu ray. The price is just insane. I purchased from Amazon's UK site for total. This particular film is region free and will play on any blu ray player. I'm still not sure why it's not available in the US. I've heard that there were legal matters concerning the story being almost identical to an older film. Whatever the case....avoid this high price and go to Amazon UK. Remember....NOT ALL BLU RAY FILMS ARE REGION FREE....so don't just go and buy everything from the UK site. Use caution and enjoy!!!

I have always thought Michael Bay was a hack and this proves it. There is a lawsuit underway (or so I've heard) from the filmmakers who made Parts. Good for them. Bay should be ashamed.

Nice Destinatioin Spoiled by Poor Camera Work - A. Petrov - Syracuse New York
Travel films on Blu-ray are so hard to find that one is tempted to buy them all. Rudy Maxa does a nice job, but it it too bad that his photographer has marched through Europe without learning to properly set the aperture on their HD camera. After a week, with my own HD videocamera I can get more predictable results. One burned out, overexposed scene after another. They have also used an incredible amount of footage from the first two segments to produce the third and forth segments which appear to be mainly filler. Too bad blu-ray is waisted this way.

The other defect is hard to understand how they could have let slip out the door. If you start this disc (I have a Sony with the latest firmware), the menu never comes up by itself. I am sure they will get a lot of returns because if you don't hit the menu button on your remote, it will keep playing the introduction and nothing more.

Overall, a beautiful destination, but spoiled by sloppy camera work, editing and bad disc authoring.

  • After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh

Not nearly "COMPLETE"..... - Brandon - TN
I love the Rambo movies but I have to address something about this new so called "Complete" set coming out on July 27. This new Rambo - The Complete Collector's Set on Blu-ray Disc appears to just be the 4 movies that are out now on blu-ray put into one package. You can actually go ahead and buy the four movies on blu-ray and get everything that is included in this set only in single cases instead of waiting for this green box or 4 disc case or whatever it is exactly. I really doubt it will be a metal tin case like the Complete Collector's Set that came out on DVD a few years back.

Also to be labeled as "Complete" there are a few very obvious things missing.

First off, the biggest and most obvious omission is the new Rambo - Extended Cut that is being released on Blu-ray on its own the exact same day as this set. That's right, a whole new version of the fourth movie with 90 minutes of new extra features and it's being left out. Why it was not included in this "Complete" set makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

The second big omission is a bonus disc including all of the extra features and documentaries that were available on a bonus disc first in the Special Edition Trilogy set and then the DVD version of the Complete Collector's Set a couple of years ago. There are nearly 2 hours of documentaries and featurettes about the original 3 movies that are not on the blu-ray discs out now. Wouldn't this have been a perfect opportunity to press a new bonus blu-ray disc with all these features and include it with this set?

The third thing missing from this set and, although not nearly as important as the first two, should still have been included is the deleted scenes from Rambo III. For some reason Lionsgate left them off of the Rambo III blu-ray. Since the July 27 Complete Collector's set appears to just have the same blu-ray of Rambo III out now don't look for it to have those deleted scenes.

Now back to that bonus disc I was talking about above; That's why a new bonus disc needs to be made so it can include them. The one made for the DVD set a few years back won't work as those scenes are not on it either so you can't just throw it in with this set. Not to mention the Teaser Trailers for the original 3 movies from the Special Editions and two featurettes "First Blood: A Look Back" and "Rambo III: Full Circle" found on the Special Edition Trilogy bonus disc but not on the DVD version of the Complete Collector's Set bonus disc. They may just be a montage of clips from the movies set to music but since Lionsgate owns them how hard would it be to include them as well?

  • The Joneses [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • From [...]-
    - 'The Joneses' are your neighbors and peers, i.e., people at the same social level as yourself.
-"Keeping Up"- means staying with the rest of the group.
-Finally the source of the Phrase "Keeping up with the Jones"- is to keep pace and appeared in the phrase 'keeping up with the Joneses'
which was coined in 1913 by cartoonist Arthur R. Momand
for the title of a series in the New York Globe. It means "trying to match the lifestyle of one's more affluent neighbors or acquaintances."
For example, 'Their buying a new van is just another attempt to keep up with the Joneses.'

I open my review with this because the exploitation of the competitive nature of neighbors and the Family unit (made up of salesmen on commission headed by Demi Moore's character)
is Well Represented and Modeled as the new norm for marketing and selling for 2010 in this movie. As I roughly knew the definition of this wise saying
I wanted to see what this movie would do. The movie addressed the topic of the Emotional self (a blind spot that Society does not address in education or
real understanding) vs. Capitalism (which validates emotions to be used for successful product creating, selling and advertising).

In this movie, peers and neighbors are a new avenue to sell and better track the impact of sales which I believe the Lauren Hutton's character helps the audience stay on track as well as the David Duchovny character to be the main goal and the right reason for living (and working which in this story is both).

The Duchovny Character forced me to look at my comfort level of buying as well as how I recommend products to my friends and family because the product has worked well in my life and
may help my friend or neighbor in theirs. What I enjoyed about this movie is that the emotions had to be looked at --because when the materials are continuously supplied and secure--the emotional emptiness which is never looked at ( yet motivates the need to buy and the need to win) is loud demanding Demi and DAvid's attention. This movie showed that the emotional involvement is more colorful than the white and crystal house the Family Unit resides.

The movie shows the line that real issues cannot be merchandise or commission solve. The movie shows salesman "charisma and magnetism" that Demi's character points as the asset of the Family Unit comes from a heart place
in David Duchovny. He tries to use his heart in order to help these people he works and lives with so they all could move forward in their lives. I liked that we find out that the Duchovny character was trying the family life as a test run and with him I found he wanted
it with the caring part and the emotional messiness.

This is not a weak movie and for me and the movie's use of the everyday- ness reminds me that we impact each other. This movie served as a great reminder what has become normal and of why 'Keeping up with the Joneses' should stay in 1913.

The Jones keep up - GreenRaider - Dallas, TX
Can you buy happiness? Not according to The Joneses. How you spend has a greater effect on your happiness than how much you spend, researchers say. "But Will It Make You Happy?" [...]

This smart movie explores our attempt to find happiness through competitive and conspicuous consumption, and the perils along the way. It will make you think twice about your early adopter friends. Are they really into those gadgets, or do they have another agenda. It will make you look at advertising in a new light. What is advertising? What is not.

David Duchovny is fantastically funny. This is a fun, stimulating movie.

  • WHAT WILL THEY SELL NEXT? - Michael Ledo - Windsor, SC United States
The starts out with the perfect family moving onto a posh community. Their home is perfect and they have all the high tech gadgets to the envy of all their neighbors. However you start to realize not everything is normal behind the scenes as the parents sleep in saparte bedrooms. When the daughter sneaks into her dad's bedroom (brief nudity) mom has to drag her out. The "secret" we find out about 20 minutes into the movie is that this family is a plant and not really a family. Their job is to make friends with everyone and show off the products so others will buy them. Their success is measured by how much luxury stuff their neighbor's buy to keep up with them. The real story comes as their perfect world unravels during a music montage as their own life gets in the way of their facade. The acting is good with strong performances by all the main characters. Today computer companies do this type of thing by placing a shill in someplace like Starbucks pretending to be a regular guy when they are actually trying to soft sell a labtop.

Ther movie is amusing, but not laugh out loud funny. It is heart warming, but doesn't make you cry. It moves along at a good pace.

The movie shows a great juxtaposition with the neighbor, who tries to be a great cosmic salesperson by listening to motivation tapes.

  • worth a watch - Bradley W. Bleck - Spokane, WA USA
An interesting examination of consumerism. The "happy ending" blunts the messages, takes the focus from what would seem to be the main point, that keeping up with the Joneses will wreak havoc with our personal finances, that "he who dies with the most/best toys wins" is a load of bunk. Instead, it becomes about personal redemption, (spoiler alert) and boy gets girl. Would have preferred the "unhappy" ending so the critique of consumer culture had a bit more "stickiness."
