rather disappointing, but has its moments - Robert J. Crawford - Balmette Talloires, France
I was quite surprised at the anti-psychoanalytic slant of this film. One of the worst guys in it is an insensitive therapist working in the dept store: he gets a simple guy depressed (informing him he hates his father). Perhaps this "insight" was misplaced, but the Santa then visits him and whacks him in the head with an umbrella handle. THe message: whether you agree or disagree with that style of introspection, it is OK to bash someone you don't like over the head. That is simple assault. I didn't like it and didn't enjoy my son laughing at the silly psychoanalyst as he went down.
Beyond that, the story is rather maudlin: widow with young child (adorably cute but needy) is seeking to find a new life in the right man. Meets the right man. Faces personal trial, child grows wiser. Plot with trial of quasi-Santa (yes, he is lovable, even as an assailant). The ending is a bit ambiguous, which at least adds some subtlety.
I did like this as a kid, but more because you watch in season than for the story itself. This viewing reinforced that.
Miracle on 34th Street Blu-Ray - Leni -
This is a great investment! Although I would have enjoyed seeing the color version in HD just as well as the B&W it was well worth my money and the video quality is outstanding, along with the 5.1 DTS-HD MA.
Miracle ON - Kirk Dangler - NYC
