  • I had the chance to watch an advance screening of this film and am looking forward to owning the DVD to see it again. I was pleasantly surprised how great the acting was; Ving Rhames is terrific as Sonny L. Probably my favorite performance, though, was from Nicholas Turturro, who could give Joe Pesci a run for his money! At times, I had to remember that I wasn't watching a documentary (although I'm sure director Robert Townsend took a few liberties!)

With the language and occasional violence, obviously this is a film for adults. Highly recommended!

    About Sub-Titles - fredyb -
I have noticed above on the spec's it says this movie has English Sub-titles, however when I was at Blockbuster as always I check to see if the DVD's are either closed captioned or sub-titled as both my kids are deaf, the DVD cover said nothing about either, so of course I put it back as I do any movie that has niether.

So I am wondering if anybody out here that own's this movie can check for me if this things is truly subtitled and would like to thank whom ever in advance. Thank You, Fredrick

  • Justice League: Season One [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • One: Everyone here complains about one thing. "Where is the WIDESCREEN", first off, I have watched the show since it first aired. The first season was aired in widescreen during the encore showing, but it changed nothing. I don't understand the problem, why widescreen? The product was produced in widescreen, but all they did was stretch the image a little, and cut off some of the upper and lower part of the screen. This is done in a lot of older movies that originally aired full screen. If you watch some of the older "made for TV" movies that were put into a DVD "widescreen", a lot of the picture is cut out. This would have been the case for this product. So, the widescreen argument with this release is worthless.

Two: The picture quality is awesome, unfortunately, it also leads to problems. For instance something that was not drawn in a background pops in all of sudden. Like Batman's belt, and some other things that is no big deal when on regular TV broadcast, or DVD playback. This is only because the producers didn't draw it for a Blu-Ray Release. This should have been corrected before releasing this set and the only reason it loses a star. This however, does not kill the Blu-Ray, being it happens rarely, but it's noticeable at times.

Three: The Sound is really good, I can't say too much because I don't have a High Standard sound system. I do have 5.1, and at least in my system it sounds good.

Last but not least: The show itself is awesome. The characters are created well, and the voice acting is topnotch. I was going to buy the DVD sets when I got back from Afghanistan, but I saw the Blu-Ray release and purchased it before I went home on leave. I am glad I had waited, because this is truly the best way to see Justice League.
I have a PS3, and a 42In 1080P Vizio. It runs well on this setup, I don't know why someone would have a problem, unless he/she has not read the instructions on his PS3 or TV. The Instructions for both systems are there for a reason!! Read them, so you can get the best playback.

4.3 But looks very nice. - Daniel Ziko -
I got this for my kids and they love it it is 4.3 but they dont mind and I dont. We watched it togetehr and it is a very nice show.

  • Only made better with Blu-ray - DCU Fan -
I'll be honest. If you have the DVD release, then there isn't any need to get this. However, if you don't have it and have a blu-ray player or a PS3 then it's worth getting the Blu-ray if you find it decently priced. For me, the Blu-ray was only about more, which isn't bad considering it's a whole season. Animation generally benefits quite a bit from high definition, and the sound is good too. Finally, don't worry about the widescreen. The show was originally aired in the the old 4:3 style, and almost all shows that re-air something in widescreen will alter the images rather than redraw them. It's not a complaint by any means, it's just the way things are since it'd be too expensive and time consuming to go back and redo something like that.

  • Echelon Conspiracy [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Very good CIA spy type of movie. Good acting, plot, and it kept me guessing. If you like spy movies you have to add this one to your collection. The story give us alot to think about, and worry about. God help us!

This is a very noisy movie - bernie - Arlington, Texas
Max Peterson (Shane West) a computer security installer who remembers backdoor passwords in case something goes wrong is just finishing a project. He receives a mysterious FedEx package that he did not order. It contains a new cell phone of the type that is not even on the market yet. Upon turning it on it immediately precedes to save his life and is in the process of making him a millionaire. This looks like fun so he goes with the flow. Little did he know that he is part of some sort of global conspiracy. Will he find out what it is in time to live long enough to spend those millions?

This is very noisy movie with lots of promising heavy sounds and whatnot luckily you can hear the dialog thralldom sound. There is lots of action and it is actually quite fun to watch. There is no real depth to this story yet the twists and turns are fun to watch. There is the obligatory sex scene, which seems out of place and is not that racy. Much of the dialogue and scenarios are lifted from previous films. One that comes to mind is the end of "War Games" were the computer has to play tic-tac-toe with itself to realize that there is no acceptable move but not to play. This could also bring to mind the Star Trek episode where the computer realizes that he is destroying the very people he is supposed to protect. There is also a dash of "Colossus the Forbin project."

In any event, it is fun to watch the interaction twin the fresh new actors and some of the seasoned ones.

Just a note I saw the Blu-ray version and was amazed at the lack of DVD extras. Not even the voice over commentary that tries to justify.

  • Oh what intricate circuits we create - Melissa R. Mendelson - New York, USA
My days are spent cruising the web, drifting through email, and blogging to night's end. The soft hum of my cell stirs me from my daze, and a voice mail waits to be heard. A social gathering is texted to my attention, and I tweet its details to my loyal followers. And I stretch further into the cyberspace, losing myself over corridors of circuitry, and trying to capture the world, but the four walls around me say different, keeping me in isolation. But this is how I live. This is how we live. No more days are spent without holding the hands to technology because we fear disconnection, but have we relinquished our control for our need to connect? And what if the day comes where all our actions become record, all secrets bleed out across the screen, and we are denied from breathing the freedom that was so adamantly fought for? What days wait for us then?

  • Ben Singer (Matthew Broderick) is a failed children s folk singer, a career proofreader, a less-than-extraordinary weekend dad, and perhaps the most negative man alive. Floundering in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comfort comes from regular chess games and friendly debates on game theory with his Senegalese roommate Ibou (Michael Kenneth Williams). When Ibou is suddenly struck ill, Ben's pessimistic worldview seems unequivocally confirmed. It takes an extended visit from Ibou s sister Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) for Ben to realize that cynicism may be all a matter of perspective.

  • Wonderful World [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • "Wonderful World" was written and directed by Joshua Goldin, his first directing project. It follows Ben Singer played by Matthew Broderick who is a really big pessimist. Ben had a successful career as a children's folk music singer, but after no one bought his acoustic album, he became jaded and withdrew from the world and spends his days in a boring, safe desk job proofreading papers. His best friend and roommate, Ibu (Michael Kenneth Williams) goes into a diabetic coma and Ben's world changes when Ibu's sister, Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) comes to stay with him while her brother is ill.

The movie feels very obvious in the opening sequences, yes, he's so pessimistic, no one invites him to parties because he's a Debbie Downer. He even says at one point that the two worst inventions were the TV remote and positive thinking. The movie really improves after more challenges are put into Ben's life through the absence of his friend, the introduction of a beautiful woman from Dakar, the diminishing relationship with his daughter, Sandra (Jodelle Ferland), and the loss of his job, and his attempt to sue the city for depraved indifference. Oh and not to mention, hallucinations of "The Man" (Philip Baker Hall) as an obstacle for him to mouth off to when he smokes weed. The simple life of sitting around playing chess is put on hold.

I had a hard time seeing Matthew Broderick who is excellent at oozing a positive attitude do such an about face here. It definitely plays more funny-grouchy than dark and I think that was the director's intentional choice. Everything he does still has a certain charisma, even when he's shutting others out.

Young Jodelle Ferland as his daughter was a great choice. When I looked her up on IMDB, I had to gasp because I knew I recognized her from something and it was "Kingdom Hospital", the Stephen King mini-series where she played the creepy little girl ghost! In this film, her character has a lot of self-doubts and she is shy and has trouble really communicating with her father even though she desperately wants to. Their estranged relationship begins to repair after interacting with Khadi and watching her gradual coming out of her shell was very sweet.

Sanaa Lathan as Khadi was a breath of fresh air. She really delved deep into the culture and came out looking and sounding so authentic. I didn't realize until the DVD extras that she was using an accent, it sounded amazingly good. The way she communicated and the way she moved really grab your attention and hold it in a good way, she almost glows as Ben begins to fall in love with her.

Ally Walker plays Ben's ex-wife, Eliza. I just recently saw her in "Toe to Toe" so another appearance so quick after so long not seeing her work was unexpected. Her role in "Toe to Toe" was so depressingly indifferent toward her daughter to an almost unrealistic level, but here she plays the opposite as a mother who is more overprotective of her daughter and before even asking her about her day, she assumes Ben has said something destructive to her again and shuts him out. On the flip side though, she has a great scene where she shows some vulnerability and reveals that while she isn't 100% happy with her new life, she prefers it to being dragged down on a daily basis.

I wish there had been more music in this movie! Broderick plays a little guitar in a scene, we hear a quick sample of his CD, and we don't hear him sing till the finale. It's just such soothing melodic acoustic guitar and I am tempted to try and find a soundtrack somewhere. My favorite quote in the film was "It's such a shame to be so talented at something no one cares about." When Ben performs his children's folk music finally, the kids are uncharacteristically ecstatic.

Looking at that group of kids, I really don't believe they would have been impressed by something so nice and pleasant with today's short attention spans. If he had been playing to a crowd in the 60s maybe, but today's kids would rather play outside or video games unless it's an ice show or Disney rock concert in front of them. That deviation from reality aside, it was still nice to see the character Ben get back to his roots eventually. Everything in this movie is a matter of perspective and some people might find that boring but I felt it all added up to a very pleasant movie. As he warms up to people and the idea of the world being a better place than he's seen it as of late, you too will be warmed watching it. I loved the exploration of another culture and the comparisons to America and making Ben enjoy the freedoms he has instead of criticizing his ex-wife for living in a big house with a big shot. I felt like the parting message here was a quote from a different movie, "Death to Smoochy", "You can't change the world, but you can make a dent." By changing his own corner, Ben finds a way to bring happiness to people around him again instead of misery.

    DVD Extras:

There are three featurettes, "As Soon as Fish Fall Out of the Sky: Character and Story of Wonderful World", Working with the Director and with Matthew Broderick, and a Behind the scenes montage. All three are very short, probably two to three minutes a piece and are pieced together from interviews done with individual cast members. While more is explored about the characters in the first one, the director and actor one is just people heaping praise on them, and the montage is just shots of directing and camerawork put to music. A fourth featurette: "HDNet: A Look at Wonderful World" feels like one of those behind the scenes previews they play at my local movie theater and doesn't cover any new ground.

Mopey yet ultimately uplifting - D. Hartley - Seattle, WA USA
"The only crime left in the f*****g world is negative thinking," laments Ben Singer (Matthew Broderick) who holds the worldview that everything is fixed, yuppies are the root of all evil, and we're all doomed anyway so why bother. A failed children's singer (his sole album long relegated to the dusty cutout bins of history), the divorced Ben now works a dead-end job as a proofreader. When one of his co-workers chastises him for not sharing in the congratulatory excitement surrounding the news that another co-worker (an aspiring actor) has just landed his first television acting gig, he dismisses the scold with a shrug and says "I don't delude myself with hopes and dreams." He's a real piece of work.

Interestingly, however, he does have friends. He participates in a weekly after-hours jam session in the back room of a music store with a small group of pals, and proves to be a decent guitarist; it makes us wonder exactly why he's squandering his talents. As the music store owner surreptitiously observes, "That's a shame, to be good at something no one cares about." His roommate Ibu (Michael K. Williams) a Senegalese immigrant, doesn't let Ben's chronic glumness dampen his perpetually sunny disposition, and considers him to be a good friend regardless. Ben does approach a state approximating enjoyment when he spends time with his precocious 11-year old daughter (Jodelle Ferland); although his negative waves are markedly straining their relationship and becoming a source of concern to Ben's ex-wife (Ally Walker). Ben seems quite happy to continue wallowing in his half-empty glass bubble of apathetic detachment, until a series of unexpected and personally challenging events shakes his world up, not the least of which arrives in the person of Ibu's sister (Sanaa Lathan) a Senegalese national who shows up on his doorstep one fateful day.

While this is a somewhat familiar narrative (the self-pitying mope gets snapped out of his myopic torpor by the Free-Spirited Other), writer-director Goldin delivers it in a fresh and engaging manner. I was initially expecting the film to go in another direction (i.e. another black comedy about a bitter children's entertainer like "Shakes the Clown" or "Death to Smoochy"); but was pleasantly surprised by the genuine warmth and humanity at its heart. Broderick gives a nicely nuanced performance that I would put up there with his work in "Election". Lathan does a lovely job, as does Williams, whose gentle and endearing character here is quite a contrast to the character "Omar", who he played so memorably on the HBO series, "The Wire". Not a major film, but a rewarding one in the vein of "The Visitor".

  • Sockin' it to The Man - C. Rocklein -
A bit slow and uneventful, though it had its moments. Some of the characters in the story get tired of his complaining all the time and I kind of felt the same way. Broderick's character lacked the pizazz of his better movies, favorites being "Election", "Biloxi Blues" and even the recent "Finding Amanda" which had a lot going for it in the jaded laughs department - with a sympathetic but corrupt character, that Broderick does best. It's good to see that he can change it up a bit and I like that he goes for somewhat offbeat movies, even if they don't always hit the mark for me. I'll still pick up anything with him in it. He's developed into a real acting personality since Ferris Bueler. As for Wonderful World, it wasn't a bad movie but may disappoint somewhat if you're expecting comedic highs. It's more in the realm of suburban drama, minus the black humor. It may be successful at what it set out to accomplish, but I wasn't overly moved. 3.5 stars.

"If you do not have it, it is a treasure" - Wolof expression, from the movie.

  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army Collector's Set [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Guillermo Del Toro has become the new master of dark fantasy -- first with the quirky clockpunk "Hellboy," then with the Oscar-winning "Pan's Labyrinth." Not to mention forthcoming travels to Middle-Earth.

So you know he has the skills to pit Mike Mignola's scarlet anti-hero against an army of fairies and elves, and not make it silly. Instead, it's a spectacular dark fantasy full of humor, action, quirky appeal, romance, and some truly astounding special effects. But what really shoves this movie over the top is Del Toro's brilliant direction, and the stunning performance by Ron Perlman.

Decades ago, Professor Broom (William Hurt) told a small Hellboy a yuletide bedtime story about the Elf King Balor and his unstoppable Golden Army, and how the crown that controls the Army was split into thirds and divided among fairies and humans. Well, you can't really expect that kind of power to never be revived.

Cut to current day. Hellboy (Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) investigate a strange supernatural attack on an auction house, where the archeological curiosity known as the Crown of Bethmoora was being sold -- only to be attacked by savage tooth fairies. Turns out the crown was stolen by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a resentful young elf who is determined to take the world back from humanity -- using, of course, the Golden Army.

And while Hellboy chafes against strict new commander Johann Krauss (a suit filled with ectoplasm), Abe encounters Nuada's sister, Princess Nuala -- who also happens to have the last third of the crown. But Nuada will not allow anyone to oppose him as he searches for the Golden Army's location, and Hellboy and his friends must venture into a strange, ancient kingdom to stop him from destroying all of humanity.

The worst you can say about "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is that it sticks to the formula of the demonic outsider with a dark destiny, and his continuing romantic woes. There's some retreading as Hellboy realizes anew that he'll never fit into the world of humans, because he's big and red and has horns and a tail. Okay, we got it. Next big psychological issue!

Fortunately those flaws are relatively minor ones. Del Toro is still able to spin a dark, twisted story with some truly bizarre creatures (the utterly alien, eye-winged Angel of Death), clockpunk robots, trippy underground goblin markets and a new BPRD agent who is basically ectoplasm in a suit. And for the action scenes, Del Toro does not pull punches when it comes to the smashing action scenes -- giant thrashing vines and a one-on-one duel with Nuada are among the highlights.

With all this going on, it would be easy to neglect the characters. But Del Toro packs the script with solid snappy dialogue and some poignantly romantic moments -- including some pretty startling actions from dear ol' Abe. And he also adds little moments to this epic story that remind us that these are supposed to be people -- such as Hellboy's bickering with Krauss, or Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and having a little Manilow singalong together. It's just so cute.

But what really sets this movie apart is the "children of the Earth." No flitting Victorian sprites -- these are creatures that are weird, grotesque, dangerous and immensely powerful, from nasty little tooth fairies up to vast rock monsters and plant gods. There's an alien, bizarre aesthetic to these creatures that feels wholly real, as if Neil Gaiman casually dropped a few sketches onto the drawing board.

But as amazing as the visuals are, Del Toro never neglects the characters. Perlman is perfect for the role of "big Red" -- he's gruff, sarcastic, moody, but also endearing and self-deprecatingly likable. There are more hints of his potentially dark future, and he faces some delicately-handed temptations. But Big Red's good heart is still very much in the forefront, no matter how much human beings fear him.

Blair gives a more lively performance here as a spunkier Liz, who also has some surprising developments in store. Jones is pitch-perfect as the fish-man, who experiences the first pangs of young love for Nuala, while Goss gives a chilling, whispery performance as a rebel prince who is willing to do whatever it takes -- even kill family -- if it helps him restore the fey kingdom. Pretty good villain, since he clearly isn't trying to be bad.

This is the ultra-mega-super-whatever edition of this movie, which basically means that you get a giant cube crammed with stuff. Aside from the blu-ray (with its wealth of features and behind-the-scenes stuff) you also get a nice poster, a Del Toro "journal" of inspiration and thoughts on the film, and a little statue of a Golden Army robot. The statue seems a bit flimsy, but otherwise the Limited Edition is pretty good.

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is a wild, darkly ornate ride through the world of half-forgotten gods and fey. While it has a few flaws, those are far outweighed by the brilliant of Del Toro's vision.

Almost perfect - Eugene Opal - KC, KS USA
On the whole this is a magnificent set.. The only thing that disappoints me is the quality of the "statue". But for the price who can complain, I was more excited about the blu-ray disc and the limited edition book anyway...

  • Before history and beyond imagination! The machinations of gods above and the fates of man and monsters here below play out in a Clash of the Titans. Decades prior to the sensational 2010 version of the tale, Harry Hamlin took up sword and shield to play valorous Perseus, mortal son of Zeus (Laurence Olivier) who sets out to fulfill his destiny by rescuing beloved Andromeda from the wrath of goddess Thetis (Maggie Smith). Perils await Perseus time and again. And eye-filling thrills await viewers as stop-motion effects legend Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts) unleashes snake-haired Medusa, fearsome Kraken, winged Pegasus, two-headed dog Dioskilos, giant scorpions and more. Rejoice, fantasy fans: the movie gods gift us with adventure that’s innovative, heroic, titanic.

  • Clash of the Titans (Blu-ray Book) Reviews By Customers
  • I took my grandson to see the new "Clash of the Titans" at the theater a couple of months ago and he really enjoyed it. He was especially intrigued with the Medusa. Afterwards, I told him of the original movie that came out in 1981 and that if he thought this Medusa was scary he should see the first one. That prompted a bunch of questions, like, "Do you have the original movie?" and I said no, which prompted me to order this DVD so we could sit down and watch it together. Although the stop-motion animation was high tech for its day and seems outmoded in this era of computer animation, he really enjoyed the movie and thought it was better in many ways than the newer one we had just seen a week before! This has always been one of my favorite cult flicks, and a new generation has been turned on to it because of this DVD.

  • The Amateurs [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Though it is listed in IMDB as The Moguls, the title was changed to The Amateurs. One title was meant to be ironic and the other is sincere. I think sincere is the way to go, for The Amateurs is nothing if not sincere. Though the subject could be sleazy, it is handled so sweetly--it is the story of an unemployed but sincere man (Jeff Bridges) who inspires his friends in a small town to pull together and against all odds make a movie. A dirty movie.

    The Dude Abides

Bridges will always be known as The Dude from The Big Lebowski, regardless of what other roles he plays. Cast as the President of the United States, he was heard to remark, "so, The Dude gets to be President." Now that he has won the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Country Singer Bad Blake in Crazy Heart, The Dude has finally received some recognition. In The Amateurs, made just before his Oscar win, he has created another great character--he may be an unemployed incompetent, but he has a big heart.

Jeff Bridges was finally persuaded to do this project because of the writing. Michael Traeger wrote the script and directed. He was a first time director, but Bridges has had good luck with first time writer/directors because they have usually spent a lot of time thinking about the movie while writing the script, and by the time they get to direct, they have a very good idea of what they're looking for.

There is a character in The Amateurs who also wants to be a Writer/Director. He is called Some Idiot. "Some" for short. The film within a film was written and directed by "Some Idiot" and his directing chair is inscribed "Some Idiot." Some Idiot is played by veteran character actor Joe Pantoliano. You might have noticed him in Daredevil, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, The Matrix, Bound, Midnight Run, The Goonies, or Risky Business. He suffers from depression and has written a book and has a web site devoted to helping others with similar issues.

Ted Danson plays Moose, who pretends to be a mucho macho he man but is gay. He doesn't really fool anyone. Ted Danson will always be known as Sam Malone, the former ballplayer and current womanizer/bar owner from "Cheers." Or "Becker," or the guy on "Ink," or most likely, the guy who was dating Whoopie Goldberg and thought it would be funny to show up with her at a Roast in Blackface and make watermelon jokes. One of his fondest ambitions was to do the same sort of over the top characterization of a gay character. In the context of The Amateurs this is very sweet, because his friends still accept him; in fact they have known all along.

Patrick Fugit is best known for playing the young Rolling Stone writer in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. In Amateurs he plays a film buff that works in a video store and is hired to run the camera. He is also shooting video footage. It is a quiet, nuanced performance. He blends in with his surroundings, and you don't even notice that he's filming everything.

Timothy Blake Nelson plays Barney Macklehatton, and in the context of The Amateurs, it is one of the more normal roles. He is the romantic lead who might even get the girl. He usually is cast as a freakish misfit of some kind, such as his role in O, Brother, Where Art Thou? It was a rare opportunity for him, and he relished the chance. Plus, he got to work with Jeff Bridges who is after all, The Dude.

William Fichtner is another veteran character actor who was in numerous films that are well known to the film going public: The Dark Knight, The Chumscrubber, Crash, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, The Perfect Storm, Armageddon, Albino Alligator, Strange Days, Quiz Show, and Malcolm X. Otis, the character he plays, is very enthusiastic about the project but everyone is being asked to put up ,000 and his assets lack the necessary liquidity:

    ----------
Otis: I'm in. Except for no money, it's a no-brainer for me. First off, making a stag film *has* to be a good time. Number two, my hat's off to you. Good job. We can do this. Wha-what are we talking about here? Making a dirty movie - film, whatever, whatever. What does that require? Pointing a camera at a he and a she... he'in and a-she'in.
    ==================

He just wants to stand around and watch everything. Is there a job like that? Turns out there is, and he is made an executive producer.
Now, they just need talent and some of the actors and actresses in the film within a film are Isaiah Washington who was not the bartender on "The Love Boat" but was Dr. Preston Burke on "Grey's Anatomy," the guy who was forced to publicly apologize for insensitive remarks and then fired; Judy Greer, who played Judith's snarky but sexy sister Myra on "Two and a Half Men;" Valerie Perrine, from Can't Stop the Music with The Village People; and Glenne Headly, who played Tess Trueheart in Dick Tracy.

Other cast members of note are Jeanne Tripplehorn, who played Jackie O. on Grey Gardens, as well as being in *Waterworld* and *Basic Instinct*; Lauren Graham, Lorelai Gilmore of "The Gilmore Girls" and currently Sarah Braverman on "Parenthood;" Steven Weber, who was Brian Michael Hackett on "Wings;" and Brad Garrett who was Robert Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond." Though the rest of the cast of The Amateurs were less well known, and in fact may have actually been amateurs, they also provided strong contributions to the success of the project.

The Bottom Line is The Amateurs is a very likeable indie film about making a film. For a film about making a dirty movie it is surprisingly sweet. Along with the amateurs, there is some very big talent, like Oscar winning actor Jeff Bridges -- The Dude. He pulls the whole thing together.

    ------------
    Otis: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

COULDN'T WATCH THE WHOLE THING - AWLFUL - Joseph A. Kengor - Youngstown, OH USA
A word to the wise - avoid all films from First Look Entertainment. Cheaply filmed,
terribly written. With a cast like this it should've been a brilliant comedy. It is not. What we get is good actors sleep-walking through the script. Just awlful.
Visually, it looks like they use videotape, you know, where you get 4 blank tapes for the price of 3.
As far as the story goes, they keep talking about "the town" getting involved with making the movie. All you see are the same 6 morons. It's hard to enjoy a movie when you don't feel empathy for any of the actors. Bridges deserved all the bad stuff that happened to him.

  • His life changed history. His courage changed lives. Academy Award winner Sean Penn stars in this stirring celebration of Harvey Milk, a true man of the people. Based on the inspiring true story of the first openly gay man elected to major public office, this compelling film follows Milk’s powerful journey to inspire hope for equal rights during one of the least tolerant times in our nation’s history. With a stunning all-star cast, including Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsh, Diego Luna and James Franco, it’s the emotionally charged story that was proclaimed the Winner of The New York Film Critics Circle Best Picture Award!

  • Milk [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Sean Penn gives a sensational performance in this movie which takes a wide-angle view of the early days of the struggle for gay rights. Penn brings to life Harvey Milk, a brave, charming pioneer who transforms himself into a brilliant politician becoming the first openly-gay person to be elected to a major political office in the United States. The movie also draws a fair and balanced picture of the man who shot him, a fellow council member called Dan White. Josh Brolin gives a wonderful performance of the troubled White without demonizing him. The movie hints he may have been a closeted gay man himself although there is no evidence of this in the historical record.

But Milk is at the heart of everything that happens here. We see his own mixed-up personal life, from the moment he meets one lover in the New York subway system, to the suicide of a second lover. Penn doesn't try to make him some kind of mythical hero but his fundamental decency always comes through. Not so for his opponents, especially the noxious, self-righteous Anita Bryant (where did she disappear to??) who campaigns to fire all homosexual teachers.

This movie, although it has a sad ending, is never depressing and gives us hope that we have come a long way since then in the struggle for basic fairness for gay people, although there is still a long way to go.

Another great character role for Sean Penn - Newton Ooi - Phoenix, Arizona United States
Every decade, Hollywood has an actor that takes the tough roles and turns them into great movies. For the past 10 years, this would probably be Sean Penn. With classics such as 21 Grams, Mystic River, and now Milk, Sean Penn has progressed far from his bad boy days and is now one of the best American actors. Milk is Penn's portrayal of the political career of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay men elected to public office in the USA. Starting in NYC and ending in the Bay Area around San Francisco, this movie shows how the closeted gay Mr. Milk became openly gay, and then a gay rights crusader who took on big political honchos in California and the US national scene. All the major characters from Milk's later life are included in this movie, though the movie does not mention anything about his family. I would normally give this movie 5/5 stars, but the inclusion of numerous gay love scenes was quite gross, and quite have been easily excluded without taking away for the movie. Hence the 4/5 stars instead. But overall, a good portrayal of how local politics works, the gay rights movement, and good commentary on American society in general.

    I'm gay, but I'm a history nut, so I have to be honest, it's a miss! - M. Pope - San Francisco
I'm gay, but I'm a history nut, so I have to be honest, it's a miss. I would never hire someone portrayed as the second main character in a film to be it's historical consultant (Cleve Jones). They should rename this film MILK & CLEVE. I guess the unknown screenwriter was able to get Gus Van Sant as director because he knew Cleve who knew Van Sant, another reason why Cleve is so prominent as a hero.

I didn't think there was much particularly more than average about this film. The score was un-inspired, the screenplay boring, the directing average, the sound recording was bad at times and I could not understand the dialogue at times, the cinematography was average. The acting...well, there were few characters I believed, and if they weren't portraying real life and death situations, I would not have cared what happened to them. I sense Harvey had many flaws as do we all, particularly those so ambitious, but we did not see many of them. That's why he does not seem real. I am not a big Sean Penn fan, but the best movie I saw him do was a true story about about stealing tractors in Tennessee many years ago, with Johnny Depp? Either Harvey was a very cold fish with his lovers, or Sean Penn should not portray gay characters. The little affection shown was not believeable. The crazy lover who commited suicide played by Diego Luna was one of the only believable actors in the film. Even the "tough dyke" was too nice! Anita did do good job of portraying herself!

Watch the Life and Times of Harvey Milk documentary instead!

  • Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle.  He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as an unpopular high school poetry teacher.  His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won't give his father the time of day.  He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school's adorable art teacher, but she doesn't want to get serious, or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.  Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

  • World's Greatest Dad [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • It could be my Indian upbringing but for some reason I always feel at home when I watch Robin Williams. It could be the kindness in his eyes or the fragrance his happiness illuminates but he truly is a remarkable actor. In WGD, he does prove to me that even at 59, he remains one of the world's greatest actors.

This film is for the morally tweaked, definitely not for those who live by calling everything mundane. It's funny, it's teary, it's funny, it is my film of the month. Do watch and share the word.

Garbage, not a comedy, a sham - EugeSchu - WI USA
Why did they make this movie? It's vulgar and not funny. The story is sickening and pointless. Promoting this movie as "Hilarious" is disgusting and highly deceptive. Avoid like a plague.

    OMG - NurseH -
OMG! Don't waste your money, I spent a dollar to rent it and that was the worst dollar I ever spent. This is a horrible movie. the only think funny is that they call it a comedy. I rented it because my husband likes Robin Williams and I figured even though it was not a well known movie I would get it anyway because it starred him. I was so disappointed in him. I can't believe that he would play in a movie like this, morbid humor. I'm thinking, "Did he even read the script before?" Maybe I just didn't get it? Well don't just rent/buy it because it has Robin Williams in it...Save your money for something you will enjoy more, like maybe dental work....LOL

  • I'll be honest that when this hit the theater I was working at, I thought it looked liked what it was marketed as: a cheap teen melodrama thriller. The moniker that sadly made the DVD box, "Together they must solve his murder...before it's too late" didn't help matters. This isn't really a mystery because there's never really a "who-dun-it" moment. I happened to see a clip of this and was surprised at how drawn I was (probably because Justin Chatwin's character is a writer like myself) but truly, this movie had a much greater potential and execution of its themes than I would've imagined.

A year and a half after its release, I finally borrowed it from the local library and I was astounded how deep this thing was. I think there are probably a lot of movies that get overlooked simply because of mediocre acting or some other flaw (and don't get me wrong, there's certainly room for improvement in that area for this flick), but the thematical material, best captured by the original tagline, "Life, Death and Something In Between" really does play out quite beautifully.

You see the two main characters at their best and their worst - particularly Annie Newton, wonderfully embodied by newcomer Margarita Levieva, who has a commanding presence even in what could be the most awful scenes if another actress had been there. I was truly enraptured by the story - not a murder mystery, but rather a journey for both characters of finding the self and redemption. I remain rather vague in this review simply because I hate to ruin anything about the film. If you love storytelling as much as I do, you owe it to yourself to give this film a shot. It's not just a "teen melodrama" or some new take on "Ghost", but it rather easily crosses genres, something director David S. Goyer acknowledges is more affluent in European cinema than American. We're used to separating and labeling, but truly this film transcends a lot of labels and stands on its own as a unique blend. It offers notsomuch a "mystery" but rather a "journey". Of love and redemption, of the budding relationship between Nick and Annie as they each find a reason to give their life meaning.

I'll admit I identified so much with the characters that it's become rather an obsession. I plan on tracking down a copy not only of the novel which inspired the original Swedish film (the differences of which are discussed in the director and writer's commentary on this disc) but that film as well, simply because the journey of each adaptation fascinates me. I've also contributed to the Wiki entry for the film (although not the plot summary, which I still need to edit from the previous contributor, who did more biased play-by-play then a neutral rundown of the plot).

I really enjoyed this movie, it was an interesting topic. Plus it doesn't hurt that Justin Chatwin is super hot.

What a nice change. I instruct High School At-Risk students and I wanted to show a movie about setting goals and thinking about your future. A student suggested this to me. It is a B-to C+ quality film, but there is a definite message they portrayed in this movie. I checked out the book, because I always believe the book is better than the movie--this was a definite no for the first time in my life. The movie was a bit too long in dragging out the search, and you have to have some imagination when watching this, but I will show it again another year.

I love this movie but this is the first Blue Ray I've seen that actually removed scenes from the movie. The version thats shown on TV is actually longer and better. They did a terrible job making this BlueRay

  • Gluck: Orpheus and Eurydike [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • The German choreographer Pina Bausch seeks to combine elements in their work. Theater, music and modern dance reflecting human feelings. This was attempted by many, but few can have a unique style. His trademark is the stage dance, several times turned to popular music, text, extreme creativity. The risk is part of your DNA, never settled, always sought innovation. His work combines despair, suffering and sorrow with the "warm expression of love for life."
Often draws on personal biography of his dancers, forget the plot and makes the individual the center of attention. His body language is unique, incisive, provocative. This is the differential, the peculiar and creative choreographer found to produce.
Orpheus und Eurydike is your personal reading of Greek myth. Transforms the music of Christoph W. Gluck in dance, but not forget the roots of the work. The song is present in three characters, recounting the joys and anxieties of the Greek god of music in search of his beloved deceased. Each character has his double, a dancer and a singer. The singers are outstanding: Maria Ricarda Wesseling (Orpheus), Julia Kleiter (Euridike) and Im Sunhae (Love), play their characters just right. Accompany the dancers and interact with them.
The dance is the central theme, the music flows to the plot, but the steps tell the story. The distribution of the dancers on the stage is differentiated scenic. Width, depth and subgroups show the unique style of the choreographer.
Orpheus is played by Yann Bridard: the Greek god is naked, desperate search for his beloved, his lyre is the weapon. Enthralls all who are on their way with agile steps, deep, dramatic. Never expressed much smaller movements.
Love, Mitek Kudo, allows the descent into hell, a lyrical passage persongem trying to join. But the fate of man and even the gods is sealed.
Marie-Agnès Gillot is étoile dancer. His final scene shows the weaknesses and rediscover the joys of her lover, but this does not look for it. Dismayed, she provokes, irritates. Its motion-sensitive, sometimes brusque, sometimes fast, feminine feelings show.
Pina Bausch knows combine modern dance with traditional opera. The choreography is essential in his work, but his theatrical concept is not restricted. The light, the scenarios mirrored the colors of the costumes and silence are important in driving the plot. Choreography that creatively tells the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, without exaggerations or fabrications. The only flaw is in the subtitle: it often does not translate the text, leaving much of the work without subtitles.

A unique dance-opera interpretation of this great work - Mr. John A. Coulson - Australia
Stage action in many of these early operas is minimal so combining the singing with action in the form of ballet adds to the visual appeal IF that ballet is appropriate to the libretto and singing. Very fortunately the interpretive dance choreographed by Pina Bausch is just that. She first experimented with it in 1975 and this production is a revival of that. The mezzo soprano Maria Riccarda Wesseling has a gorgious voice ideally suited to the role of Orpheus and her role is shadowed by the dancer Yann Bridard.

On first acquaintance this dance-opera interpretation can seem odd and I found it required more than a single viewing to decide if it was personally appealing - and untimately yes it was. The music is beautifully played and sung under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock which combined with very effective costuming and lighting comes across superbly in the Blu Ray format. The audio quality is appropriately first class.

    Highly recommended.

For those accused of witchcraft by their neighbors and friends, there was little chance of clearing their names; the mass paranoia that ravaged through the community took the lives of 19 innocent men and women. With an all-star cast of Kirstie Alley, Rebecca De Mornay, Kristin Booth, Shirley MacLaine, Peter Ustinov and Alan Bates, Salem Witch Trials dramatically revisits 1692 colonial America and the haunting legacy it holds.

  • Just watched the Blu Ray and have to say it was a compelling viewing of almost 3 hours. I am no expert on Blu Ray qualities but would say this was a great transfer. Sound I believe isnt much just a 2.0 but was good enough to absorbe what was taking place. Only on the onset did i detect some weird horizontal shadows when looking 'off-centre' which soon went away not sure if its the transfer or player. I am in Australia with a Region B and this US version is confirmed as region free and played with no problems by me. There are no extras on this copy.

I havent much to say about the content except to say for the money paid I was well entertained for 3 hours and felt compelled and absorbed by this movie. If anything it shows the dangers of religeous fundementalism which probably assisted in the demise of Puritanism in this case. But alerts us to all forms of fundementalism that humans will create to set themselves apart from others and often with dangerous consequences. This year being 2010 we as a specie are still not freed from this phonomenom.

salem witch trials - Richard N. Stretton -
A good movie about the Witch trials in Salem Mass. The evolution of blame and hysteria into virtual murder for land, pay back for anything real or imagined, and abuse of political power is well depicted. The feeding of the hysteria on itself until no one was safe and until the governor stopped it after his wife was accused is shown and by analogy has been carried into modern times with the accusers trnsformed into the equivalent of rock stars. The ending is a little weak but overall a good picture.

Great movie - Matt - MS
This movie perfectly, and I mean PERFECTLY depicts how religion can brainwash you if taken too far. Throughout the whole movie, those girls were scared to death from the teachings of the church and any little thing they did they got scared and thought they would go to hell. I remember when this movie first came on CBS in 2001. Glad I remembered it and ordered the movie.

  • A powerfully moving large format film unlike any other, Hurricane on the Bayou carries audiences behind today's news headlines on a journey deep into the soul-stirring heart of Louisiana - before, during and after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Narrated by Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep and driven by a rousing jazz, blues and gospel-fueled soundtrack featuring music legends Fats Domino, Aaron Neville, Dr. John and many more, Hurricane on the Bayou is both a haunting document of a storm's human effects and a compelling call to restore Louisiana's wetlands, rebuild New Orleans, and honor the place where America's most vibrant home-grown culture was born.

Unfolding against the poignant backdrop of the most costly natural disaster in America's history, MacGillivray Freeman's IMAX cameras follow a group of four musicians, both legendary and rising, as they explore the electrifying culture of New Orleans: speed through the beautiful, alligator-filled bayous on airboats; recount their heart-wrenching, personal stories of Katrina; and most of all, bring the focus to the rapidly disappearing wetlands that are New Orleans' first line of defense against deadly storms. The wealth, cultural vitality and very future of New Orleans depend on the preservation of these wetlands.

The soundtrack features music legends Fats Domino, Aaron Neville, and Dr. John as well as many more!

  • Grammy nominated cajun bluesman Tab Benoit is the perfect and authentic story teller for this documentary. A must see for all Tab Benoit fans! The cajun heart throb is a natural on film: Tab Benoit sizzles as much on the big screen as he smokes on the guitar! The urgency of the vanishing wetlands is clearly heard through Benoit's passionate heartfelt delivery. It's obvious that Tab knows the region well and loves it deeply. The original cajun music featured within this film captures the soul of the Bayou. The photography is visually stunning and punctuates the beauty of nature before with shocking aftermath visuals. While the documentary evades the bigger unspoken political issues contributing to the worst disaster fiasco in American history, it's still worth the watch for environmental enthusiasts. It's also a good resource film for students. It has enough entertainment woven throughout the film to maintain the student's interest while delivering a solid historical lesson. Be sure to watch the DVD extras which are just as interesting and informative. Every high school and middle should own a copy of this film.

Again with the lie that "Katrina hit new Orleans!" - Michael D. Kelley - Pascagoula, MS
Those of us in Mississippi who were where Katrina ACTUALLY hit are getting a bit tired of this garbage of sympathy for and honoring of "poor Louisiana and New Orleans" where Katrina DID NOT HIT!

New Orleans suffered because generations of corrupt politicians (a continuing phenomenon) pocketed the money allocated to build, rebuild, and strengthen the levees. New Orleans did not get hit by Katrina, it got hit by flooding AFTER Katrina was over because the levees gave way.

Parts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast had surges THIRTY-ONE FEET above mean high tide. New Orleans had five feet of surge that the levees should have handled.

No one in Mississippi rioted, looted, or shot at rescue helicopters - black, white, or whatever we just stuck together.

    Gimme a break!

Well done video - Freedbird -
We saw this film at an IMAX theatre but decided we wanted to have it to play again at home. The photography and music are great, and the story is one we need to remember.

FANTASTIC!!! EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS - A. Harrison - ROME, GA USA
My family and several friends saw this Documentary movie at the Imax in New Orleans in April 2010. It was Fantastic. It has such a personal touch to what happened there, it centers mostly on the damage and loss of the wetlands and marine and animal life. It also touches on the impact to the survivors, both animal and human. Several in our group had tears in their eyes, along with many of the other people in the theater. At the end of the movie people in the theater gave it a Standing Ovation. You will not be dis-appointed with this movie. You will want to share with your friends. Since we purchased the movie, we have viewed it several times. With the current problem with the oil slick off the Bayou, you will see how important it is to help preserve these waters.

  • If it moves, smash it! The filmmakers behind The Matrix and V for Vendetta bring new blood (lots of it!) to martial arts movies in Ninja Assassin. Korean pop star Rain (Speed Racer) stars as heroic, deadly Raizo. Trained from childhood in the way of the Ozunu Clan ninja, he is stalked by fellow warriors for breaking free of them and their iron-willed dojo patriarch (martial arts legend Sho Kosugi)... and is on the run with a Europol agent (Naomie Harris) who has proof the clan sells assassination services to governments. The action is start-to-finish – fast, fierce, filled with weaponry (chains, swords, staffs, shuriken) and awesome athleticism. Fear not the weapon, but the hand that wields it.

  • Quite frankly I think I did :). Japanese Pop Star Rain plays Raizo who turnes on the leader of a deadly clan of Ninja's that trained him when they want him to kill an innocent girl. And then you can pretty much say my eyes was introduced to a barrage of Ninja Stars, Sword Fighting and stunts that make Jet Li look soft. My only problem with this film is the amount of fake looking blood. They are lots of it but the action is to fun to watch to simply care. The only other thing that holds this movie back is the slow pace it takes when a woman starts to investigate these deadly Ninja's. I like the story of the Flashback of Raizo being trained by the Ninja leader as a young kid though. Reminds me of Bloodsport in a way. I expect this film to get a lot of people interested in Ninjutsu that's for sure. Definitely buy this!

Boy Band Ninjas??? Blu ray review - A. Scultore - NY
STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE! No doubt the reason why this is being so highly rated is because Ninja/Kung Fu movies have die hard fans. They usually can't see anything objectively through their Ninja colored glasses.

Ninja Assasin is a fun popcorn flick (if you can keep your food down?)! There is a choppy story line that is not bad. The acting on the other hand is (for the most part). Rain a Korean Pop Star, plays a deadly Ninja named Raizo. he was abducted as a young child and trained to become a deadly assasin. The "family" kills the only thing he ever loved which sets Raizo on a hellbent course to destroy them. That's it...not really much else.

Now if you don't care for acting and execution, but you love stylized kung fu violence, this movie is for you!

NOW FOR MY BLU RAY THOUGHTS: This movie is probably best suited for full 1080p viewing! It looks great, and sounds awesome too. FINAL THOUGHTS: Wait for it on cable! NINJA FANS: Go get your black suits on and take out your foam nunchucks...BUY!

    It's just a movie people.. - F. R. Nickles Jr. - Stevens Point, WI
Honestly I thought the movie was entertaining and I'd watch it again
The coolest part of the movie was when he healed himself and then went on fighting ...
I've been trying to figure out how I can heal myself since I watched that...
The fight scenes are pretty incredible even if somewhat unrealistic at times - but the fighting is just pretty incredible - there's no other word about it. The story line? well I'd put it as one of those old B movies

I kept wondering how he went that long without anything to eat

  • 50 First Dates [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • 50 FIRST DATES is one of Adam Sandler's sweetest comedies and Drew Barrymore's presence has got a lot to do with that. The story is set in Hawaii, so plenty of those nice, evocative sunsets. Barrymore is Lucy Whitmore, a cheerful art teacher whose automobile accident severely damages her temporal lobe, this causing her to relive the same day over and over (think of it as a less wintry GROUNDHOG DAY). Blake Clark and Sean Astin are terrific as, respectively, her father and brother, who sacrifice their lives to play along, resetting things at the end of every damn night, so that Lucy's life is made as uncomplicated as possible. No surprises for Lucy, goes the mandate. She wakes up to the same day, which is her father's birthday. But what's fair, really? And how do you toe that moral line between easing a devastating trauma and outright living a lie?

In steps Henry Roth, womanizing feller and yet sympathetic. Henry is a marine-life vet working at an aquatic park which means we're privy to amusing animal shenanigans with the walrus and the dolphins and such. Adam Sandler plays Henry as quite likable and I even buy that he falls so hard for Lucy that he foregoes his lecherous, commitment-phobic ways. And what strikes a girl's fancy swifter than the notion of a guy having to win the same girl every day all over again. As for the tone of the film, it's not as much that Sandler's leaning for crude frat-boy humor is toned down as much as it's mitigated by an underpinning of warmth. And, really, put that down to Drew Barrymore. As in THE WEDDING SINGER, Sandler and the marvelously expressive Barrymore demonstrate an irresistible chemistry. These two make a fun, fun couple.

Thing is, I'm still the kind of guy who busts a gut at sophomoric gags. I think Rob Scneider is awesome as Ula, Henry's good-natured but pretty messed-up assistant; he provides plenty of the belly laughs. Surprisingly, Sean Astin, not exactly acclaimed for the funny, is hilarious as Lucy's roided-up brother. Throw in Sandler's sweet "Forgetful Lucy" song and a great surprise ending, and 50 FIRST DATES crosses off key items on the checklist: a head-turning premise; a terrific cast; a winning romance; a touch of heartbreak; a picturesque tropical setting; and laugh-out-loud humor. And then there's Ten Second Tom. And you thought Lucy's plight was horrible...

Cute, tender... but irritating! - Robert Schmidt - Honolulu, HI USA
Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) is a womanizing veterinarian working on Oahu and preying on visiting tourists. Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) is a school teacher who suffered a traumatic head injury that results in her keeping her long-term memories prior to the accident, but wipes her short=term memories clean every 24 hours.

Roth falls for her, but finds himself having to get her to like him every day... 50+ first dates! Sandler and Barrymore demonstrate a mutual chemistry that makes you believe they like each other! And the secondary characters in this film, from Whitmore's father and steriod-using brother to

This is a cute romantic comedy, but Adam Sandler's crude banter got a bit tedious for a character supposed to be tender and supportive. This persona fits him perfectly in, say, Happy Gilmore. However, it is a leap to expect that a philander changes his lifestyle so abruptly. Ah, Hollywood! And there is a strangeness with the secondary characters in this film. Lucy Whitmore's father and steriod-using brother, as well as the employees at the cafe where Lucy goes every Sunday (and for Lucy, now every day is that Sunday)\) are so caring and protective of Lucy. Henry Roth's friends, however, are crude or... strange.

Still, it was a fun movie to watch, and the ending is surprising and upbeat.
