  • A nostalgic look at a young boy's coming-of-age in postwar Italy and his fascination with a small local cinema, CINEMA PARADISO from director Giuseppe Tornatore is a famed and beloved classic.'Alfredo is dying'... those words jolt the successful filmmaker Salvatore (played as a child by Salvatore Cascio, as a teen by Marco Leonardi, and as an adult by Jacques Perrin), into contemplating his childhood and the hours he spent in the projection booth of his adored local movie theater, Cinema Paradiso. Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), owner of the moviehouse, befriended and encouraged young Salvatore, known as 'Toto' as he grew up in his small Sicilian home town, ravaged by the horrors of the war. The cinema offered escape and fantasy to the townspeople, including Toto's mother, a grieving war widow. In one breathtaking scene a popular comedy is projected onto the walls of the town square and the entire town glows in the dreamy light of projected celluloid, washing away the harsh realities of poverty and grief. As Toto grows to manhood, his friendship with his mentor deepens. With the love and guidance of the aging man, Toto navigates the trials of first love and builds on his ever-growing passion for the cinema. Ultimately, it is Alfredo who convinces Toto to leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a director. But as Salvatore thinks back on his youthful romances and his innocent love of movies, he comes to realise that perhaps his success has come at a very high price. A beautifully filmed tribute to the power of movies that captivated an entire generation of filmgoers, CINEMA PARADISO is an unforgettable masterpiece.

  • *** Very slight plot spoiler alert, but its minor and will not take away from the movie***

The fact that there are two versions frustrates me. Not because we're "blessed" now with more to understand about the story, but because there is a decision to make when choosing a version, and this level of art should simply be created once and left alone. The original version is what I fell in love with, and the version that won the academy award, and I feel that is a better story because we don't hold so much resentment towards Alfredo's betrayal sending Toto off to find his dreams of the movie business far away from their village and away from the love of his life. I won't go into great detail to spoil it for anyone that has not yet seen the movie, but I will say this. Either version is a masterpiece, and it's only my opinion that the original is actually the better cut. If I were to do the editing, I would have included about 10 minutes of the added one hour, and thats about it.

Like a good meal, like a good kiss, you should be left wanting more. The original does that. We're left with the desire Toto has. We're left with the understanding of what exactly he sacrificed, and left us wondering, like him, if it was all worth it. After all, no other woman in his life ever really meant anything to him after Elena. Toto's dream to be reunited with his love is still present in the original, and although the new cut answers a lot of unanswered questions, that is not always the best thing for a story.

I gave this version all the stars I can because when you break it down, although I've been clear that I prefer the orignal, any way you cut this film, it is a reel of masterful art. I'm a grown man, yet Ennio Morricone can tug at my heart strings like no other composer, and of all the amazing pieces of music this man has created, I believe this is his most beautiful and most profound work. I don't know how better a marriage of story, actors, director, composer and cinematography can ever come together more perfectly, but in the world of movie making, this movie is simply how it's done.

If you do get the chance to get a DVD with both original and extended versions, I suggest you see the original first.

Since first seeing this film, it has been in my top three or four favorite films of all time. Foreign or not. I love movies, so that says a lot.

Great movie - Woodrow Lowe -
This movie was recommend by a friend and it is one of the very best movies I have ever watched. I laughed, I cried and thought about it many times since I watched it. Don't rent it you will want to own this classic.

  • Cinema Paradiso - original theatrical release - James Shreckengost - Decatur, GA United States
I saw this movie when it first hit the screen in the USA...and couldn't wait until it came out on DVD. It is one of my favorite movies of all time, and there's much to love about it. The irrepressible Toto is a little pest, but he befriends the older Alfredo, projectionist at the lone cinema in their Sicilian village, shattered by war and poverty. Toto observes Alfredo and learns the workings of the projector, loaded with flammable film stock. A terrible accident leaves Toto in charge, and the movie fast forwards into Toto's teen years. He falls in love with the beautiful Elena, who is seemingly unattainable. Her family is wealthy, and Toto's is not. The young lovers part, never to meet again. Some other reviewers have missed the point of this movie. It is about unrequited love, and the bittersweet memories that Toto relives when learning of Alfredo's death, as the film opens. The final scene, wherein Alfredo's gift to Toto makes the point that love is the thing that makes life worth living... is incredibly powerful. Without a word, in about 2.5 minutes, the director creates a scene that is already a film classic.
    PLOT SPOILER AHEAD
Regarding the so-called "director's cut" that was issued some years after the cinema release. I saw it. It's on the flip side of my DVD. I hated it so much that I almost gouged that side of the DVD to keep it from ever being played again. Better to have the film end as it did originally. To have Toto/Salvatore and Elena reunite later in life is one thing...but to have them getting it on in the back seat of a car was totally unbelievable and incongruous. A successful and wealthy director would take the love of his life to the nicest hotel in Rome for a rendezvous, he would hardly consummate their relationship like two frumpy middle-aged former lovers would. Heck, most middle aged people would get a room. This scene rang falsely and ruined this version of the film.
STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL RELEASE! GET IT, OWN IT AND LOVE IT... FORGET THE DIRECTOR'S CUT!

  • Excellent
Unfortunate that when I finally get a chance to watch, one of the disks is defective.
The opening of episode 10 (last episode on disk 2). My PC chokes on it completely.
My PS3 freezes for several minutes then starts playing, near the end of the credits, or sometimes after the opening credits (so you miss the entire opening scene).

Beyond 30 days ... So, we aren't supposed to buy anything we aren't going to watch within 30 days? I'll look forward to seeing a studio state that recommendation in a press release ... Ha! Still waiting for a response from the studio.

  • UFC: Best of 2009 [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • First of all, this UFC Best of 2009 DVD is a great buy. Many great fights of many great fighters but.... Best of 2007 and Best of 2008 is way better, why? in this 2009, they talk a lot more in Ultimate Fighting Reality Show andand the journey of some fighters. At 2007, just packed with all the greatest fights of 2007, 2008? starting got some story about fighters's journey etc. But now, adding the Ultimate Fighter Show?? may be not too bad if they pick the right fights, some not to great or "best" of 2009, that could be replaced with a really great fights are:
    1)Hughes-Serra
    2) Marquardt-Maia
    3) Franklin-Belfort
    4) Quarry-Credeur

    they could have been :
    1) Franklin-Silva
    2) Machida-Rua
    3) St. Pierre-Alves
    4) Henderson-Bisping
    5) Henderson-Franklin
    6) Griffin-Ortiz II

but still, it's a great buy just like I said earlier, just a bit dissapointed with all the fights reverse above, and they still wasting time with all the UFS. The other weird thing is that they put some fights at the bonus features?? why? well, they know better, I assume.

Hopefully the Best of 2010 will be better and UFC Best DVD series will get their grip again.

I may be a bit biased since I own every UFC event on dvd dating back to UFC 66 so I've seen all the fights time and time again.I feel what hurts these releases the most is the fact they are shown on spike for FREE on Unleashed,it really does nothing for me to watch the same fights again, the only original content is the commentary Mike Goldberg provides and never before seen pre-fight/post-fight interviews..overall,it's a poor release with very little reward,I'd avoid buying this.

  • I just got into this show this summer after a friend loaned me the season 1 & 2 DVD's and have bought the remaining season's to get caught up before season 6 premiered. It's a great show, but season 5 was not shot in HD, so there's no need for a blu-ray. Save some money and buy the DVD instead. I still have to give the show a five though because it's that good and because they provide a cocky message at the front of the blu-ray that tells you that they just ripped you off. Only these guys could get away with this.

  • Miracle on 34th Street - what can you say - but one of the best Christmas movies ever! There have been many remakes and knockoffs of this move but not one can hold a candle to the original. Whether in black and white or colorized, this is an enjoyable movie to watch with the whole family. The storyline, acting and setting of the movie can never be duplicated. It is a smart well crafted movie that will "tug at the heart strings". It is a must to see and if there is anyone out there that hasn't seen this movie (???), do yourself a favor and rent, Netflix and, better yet, purchase the movie to have for your own video library.

rather disappointing, but has its moments - Robert J. Crawford - Balmette Talloires, France
I was quite surprised at the anti-psychoanalytic slant of this film. One of the worst guys in it is an insensitive therapist working in the dept store: he gets a simple guy depressed (informing him he hates his father). Perhaps this "insight" was misplaced, but the Santa then visits him and whacks him in the head with an umbrella handle. THe message: whether you agree or disagree with that style of introspection, it is OK to bash someone you don't like over the head. That is simple assault. I didn't like it and didn't enjoy my son laughing at the silly psychoanalyst as he went down.

Beyond that, the story is rather maudlin: widow with young child (adorably cute but needy) is seeking to find a new life in the right man. Meets the right man. Faces personal trial, child grows wiser. Plot with trial of quasi-Santa (yes, he is lovable, even as an assailant). The ending is a bit ambiguous, which at least adds some subtlety.

I did like this as a kid, but more because you watch in season than for the story itself. This viewing reinforced that.

  • In Brian Helgeland's new director's cut of the film, Mel Gibson portrays Porter, a career criminal bent on revenge after his partners in a street heist pump metal into him and take off with his ,000 cut. Bad move, thugs. Because if you plan to double-cross Porter, you'd better make sure he's dead. Porter resurfaces, wading into a lurid urban underworld of syndicate kingpins, cops on the take, sniveling informants and deadly gangs. Porter wants his money back. And the way he sets out to get is assures that, from beginning to heart pounding end, Payback pays off big.

  • Payback - Straight Up - The Director's Cut [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Strangely enough it is a gangster film full of faithlessness and hypocrisy, hatred and greed and yet the good guys turn out to be a gangster and a prostitute. A hold up turns too small for one of the two gangsters who wants to get rid of the other and uses this other's girlfriend to do the bad work in his own back. But in this world there is always a comeback and then a payback and the payback is always proportional to the distance to catch up on the comeback journey, and when it is near death that was the starting point of this comeback you can be sure the payback will implicate a lot of money and a lot of metal. And it does and it is not that easy to go to the top of the drug dealing business, and that sure is not easy and there are many hurdles. We wonder why he got down in front of the last one, or is it a way to really trap the boss. But he is also a very creative hit man in his come back and he pays back a lot with the metal, explosive and guns of those he shot down or he wants to bring down. He is flexible, adaptable, opportunistic and his principle is not to hit higher than the top but to hit the top just to get his due and he gets it and he does not have to share in the end. That's what is good in this gangster film. The gangster really gets our hearts in his hands because he is just asking for justice from his fellow gangsters who don't seem to have any sense of justice, nor the few cops he comes across either. New York always looks good under this light with whizzing bullets in the sky.

    'The So called Director's cut" - J. Aravindhan -
I saw this movie in the theater;loved it and bought the dvd when it was released. And I thought Porter hitting the Taxi Stand Clerk with a coffee mug was for some reason cut from the dvd(I remember this scene from the cinema or was I imagining the Clerk getting mugged?)
So when they released the 'Director's Cut' I rushed out and bought it.What a waste of money.I watch the original dvd every now and then but the director's cut only once so far and that will be it.It has been chopped and changed so much that it's not worth the effort.
I hope they release the Original in BLU RAY soon.
Can anyone shed some light on the taxi stand scene? Thanks

  • PAYBACK with mel Gibson - NEAL A REUST -
This movie was released in theaters in 1999. It is violent, has no good guys and has little social redeaming value. I loved it. It is a great guy movie.

However the same title was re-released on DVD as a Directors Cut in 2006. The Directors Cut is very disappointing and not half as entertaining as the Theatrical Release. Some of the best action is deleted and Kris Kristophersons role is totally eliminated.

My recommendation is buy/rent the 1999 release. Skip the Directors Cut unless you just want to compare the two of them.

For a limited time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary will be packaged in a collectible 24-page book featuring legendary photography from Mick Rock, best known for his iconic shots of rock and roll artists. Rock served as the chief photographer on the film.

Arriving in time for Halloween, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary Blu-ray Disc will be available for the suggested retail price of .99 U.S. / .99 CAN. Pre-book is September 8.

Selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," the film gained notoriety as a midnight movie when audiences began participating with the film in theaters. The film has entered the pop culture lexicon for its many iconic and memorable scenes, including the song "The Time Warp" which has been covered by handfuls of artists and the often quoted phrase, "Dammit, Janet."

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary Blu-ray Disc release is just one aspect of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's yearlong campaign to honor the studio's 75th birthday. This year the division will debut several select fan-favorites on Blu-ray for the first time ever including The Sound Of Music 45th Anniversary Edition, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, The Last of the Mohicans and the Alien Anthology.

  • Jamiroquai: Live at Montreux 2003 [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Now I was never really a fan of Jamiroquai from listening to their singles. Didn't dislike them but....ah well just a bit less than special, you know what I mean. Then there's that JK geezer, I mean come on, Ferraris, choppers and laddishness! I ordered the BluRay 'cos I'm an open minded sort of chap and, after all, they were at Montreux. Well well well, what a pleasant surprise. Imaginative, expressive, happy, dynamic, skillful music beautifully executed and produced. The disc is worth it for the girly chorus alone! Sure you have to get past JK prancing around like a nonce in his pseudo Sitting Bull hat, but just focus on his delivery - masterful. All in all a very fine performance from a bunch of gifted musicians. One for any music lovers' collection

I have never been able to see Jamiroquai live in concert so this is the next best thing. I hope that they have a US tour and they come somewhere near VA(we have amphitheaters and huge arenas here too guys :) - Great DVD, I have recommended it to friends who love Jamiroquai.

I was excited to see that there was a Blu-Ray version of this Jamiroquai concert. Other reviews had mentioned sound quality and I was almost deterred by their ratings, however I found the sound quality to be quite good for a concert. I think they were expecting the sound quality to be that of a normal produced audio recording. I am extremely pleased by my purchase and I'm glad to have this concert in my music library. It makes me hope that Jamiroquai will do more live performances, and if I'm not able to attend, they will document the footage with the same clarity as this concert. I would recommend this disc to anyone.

  • Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone's trust. No one suspects he's Costello's mole. How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and consequences. This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.

  • The Departed [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Movie - 4.5

Gangster movies were not something I watched a lot of, at least as a kid. All the grit, violence, drama, complexities, etc. were way over my head. But in growing up, I came to acquire a taste for these things and eventually learned to like them a lot. I still haven't seen any of the Godfather movies, but I've recently been catching up on Scorsese. And in being one of the few that's actually seen and can appreciate Infernal Affairs (the original inspiration for The Departed), I have to say I was pretty excited after initially hearing Scorsese was attached to direct this Western adaption. When I first saw The Departed on DVD some years ago, I'd never seen a whole Scorsese film in any kind of entirety, but I knew his films by name and heard he was a great director. After finally watching his most renowned work in Goodfellas, I could see why he earned such praise. With that said, upon this subsequent viewing of the The Departed I definitely like it a lot more than I did initially. It's the story of two moles: a gangster in the police and a cop in the mob. The two work their opposing bosses into trusting them, but the bosses are on to the fact that there is, indeed, an enemy mole within their own outfits. Violence, deception, drama, and thrills ensue as each mole gets closer to finding the other. In terms of comparison, I'd have to say Infernal Affairs makes for a more entertaining and fast-paced story with its kinetic score and attention to subtlety in both narrative and characters for the viewer to fill in on their own (along with 50 minutes less in running time). On the other hand, Scorsese does a wonderful job in making his version more of a character drama with the elements of the aforementioned on the side and set on the mean streets of South Boston that works very well, though tends to feel a bit cumbersome and underwhelming at times (like the love triangle, the lack of empathy for Nicholson's character compared to his Chinese counterpart, or the overuse of record label songs as opposed to an actual score). However, the film more than makes up for these shortcomings through a wonderful script and some excellent performances with an A-list cast, particularly Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, and a very foul-mouthed (though funny to listen to) Mark Wahlberg. Both are excellent movies in their own right that should cater to either side of the spectrum depending your preference for flash and execution vs. grit and progression, though I'd personally lean a little more towards the original just because it doesn't feel as tedious in certain aspects.

    Video - 4.5

For being one of the flagship BDs from Warner Brothers' early days into HD home video, the video quality actually looks pretty good. Compared to other flagship titles released from around the same time, in which some of them do or don't still hold up to today's standards, The Departed presents itself very well. The first thing that caught my eye during Nicholson's little prologue speech were the black levels and shadow delineation. As you see his silhouette walking through with a white background behind him, it instantly set the tone for me and made for some lovely foreshadowing to the film's narrative about the deceit, secrets, and hiding to occur throughout. Colors aren't very bold, and are even a bit drab, but still manage to put some real-world depth into the picture making the audience know full well that the grit and dirtiness are there. Blues, grays, and blacks tend to stick out the most in the form of police uniforms, gangster attire, and various low-lit settings, while red tends to show themselves a bit more towards the end when people start getting off'd. Contrast is also excellent and helps to accentuate some very fine textures and facial features from the creases in shirts and lining in suits to the stubble of unshaven mob goons and the wrinkles under their eyes. Overall image detail has a great deal of clarity and sharpness with near-reference quality outside of some artifacts and debris that pop up on occasion and the every-so-often instance of overly red skin tones. But all things considered, audiences should be pleased with the picture quality and that it didn't end up as badly botched as say.. Batman Begins or V for Vendetta was.

    Audio - 4.5

Using that memory-eater of a codec in Uncompressed PCM , The Departed outputs at a constant bitrate of 4.6Mbps and sounds just as excellent as one could hope. The movie starts off silent and fades into Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter at a very adequate volume that gives the film some ambiance, but never overpowers Nicholson's opening speech. Dialogue throughout remains clear and discernible from the center channel, and I was very.. amused at how well I could understand those Bostonian accents (still had to turn the subtitles on, just to be safe). Directionality is a bit sparse, but does take advantage of the clarity of lossless audio by giving off some very fine subtleties in sound effects like the opening and closing of doors, the churning of cars plodding down the street, the ringing of telephones across the room, and the approaching footsteps of people off screen. Music varies between a lot of cuts of Gimme Shelter and Dropkick Murphys' I'm Shipping Up to Boston and a little bit of score from Howard Shore here and there. For the most part, it's a fairly music-less sound scape with the dialogue doing most of the work, though gunshots and fist fights make themselves known when need be. Separation is handled perfectly between all of these elements with a lot of the music staying in the front and guns and punches panning between the fronts and rears, most notably during a raid scene towards the end. The only downside to this audio presentation is the lack of any potent LFEs, which obviously don't have very many moments to shine aside from some bass in the music, but it's still a fine movie without them.

    Extras - 3.5

With just over 45 minutes of special features, there are two of them presented: one talking about infamous Southie gangster Whitey Bulger (whom Nicholson's character is based on), and another featurette talking about Scorsese's history in film as well as his previous experiences in the gangster genre. The Whitey Bulger segment adds an intriguing sense of realism. There are various interviews with news correspondents, former law enforcement officials, and even former mob men that talk about the scope and influence of Bulger, the power he possessed for almost 30 years, and a little bit of the of stigma a person like him carried around. I'm still a bit new to the gangster genre myself and found this to be a pretty cool piece of information. It wasn't overly factual, but still managed to tell me enough that I could relate it to the movie and give it a more objective view. The Scorsese "portfolio" segment was a very great watch. Like I said, I'm just now getting into him as a director and it fascinates me to learn about his history growing up, the kinds of films he made, and a lot of the similarities and influences those works share with one another. I see him as being quite charismatic, and I'm a bit disappointed they didn't include a commentary of some sort for the movie itself. Then finally, there are also deleted scenes in SD with introductions for each one. All in all, there aren't a lot of specials in terms of quantity, but I personally enjoyed them for the outright quality.

    Overall - 4.5

The Departed is a fine adaptation of Infernal Affairs that really works for western audiences. It's not as flashy or well-executed in terms of screenplay, but it makes up for those losses in gritty atmosphere and more fleshed-out characters. And who better to portray this than a man who's certainly becoming one of my favorite directors in Martin Scorsese. I was shocked that he never won an Oscar prior to this film, but I'm glad to see he got his just due at some point. If you like cop/gangster thrillers, this would probably be near the top of my recommendations (though I would also say you try Infernal Affairs if you don't mind subtitles). With excellent video and audio specs and a good amount of informative extras, The Departed comes highly recommended.

An Overrated but Good Film in the Overcrowded Crime Film Genre - Private Quentin Tarantino Fan - nowhere
For all the generic crime films that come out each and ever year, Martin Scorsese is one of those people who you can always count on making a more substantial stand out crime film. After all, he's the one who made the best mob movies ever (Goodfellas), created a very influential independent crime film (Mean Streets), and numerous other crime films that stand out among the crowded genre (Gangs of New York, Casino). Oh sure, not all of them are equal, but they do stand out and are great films in the face of....uh....wow, what a generic genre. Never mind.

Scorsese has taken us everywhere in the crime genre, from the gritty low of the New York Streets, the mob, and even the 1860's. This time, Scorsese takes us to the streets of Boston, giving us insight into the corruption of the Boston Police Department. Scorsese doesn't quite reach the level of his other crime films, as the film comes off as a very well written, intricate crime film, top notch entertainment only. It's a twisty, sometimes plot hole ridden, crime film about two moles criss-crossing and converging in numerous ways possible, a very compelling crime film, done with great direction from Martin Scorsese (though nowhere near the level of Goodfellas, I mean come on).

However, I'm of the opinion that I find this movie to be a little overrated. It's hardly Scorsese's best work, and personally, I found The Aviator and Gangs of New York to be both better than the Departed. It's also a little generic compared to Goodfellas, which is surely one of the prime crime films that transcends the ordinary crime film genre. I think what this film lacks is insight, and the personal examination element is nowhere as profound as some of his other films. Where's the examination of the duality of being in crime, of how deadly alluring being a mobster can be? Where's the searing ugliness of relationships previously shown (Sharon Stone, Lorraine Bracco). Where's the message that shows you just how ugly and messed up being in crime can be? When watching Goodfellas, no other film shows the long-term and life wrecking nature of being in crime. Henry Hill loses everything and has to enter the witness protection program, putting in jail the friends that gave him the of his life. Best film since Goodfellas? Hardly.

Rather, the Departed comes off as a very well done trip into the Boston crime unit, but a largely meaningless look into the Boston Crime unit beyond showing corruption of the whole thing. Sure, the themes of identity are always interesting, but that's not really that profound is it? Identity ________ things up and can put us into ______, I think that's easy to figure out. It's also fairly bland compared to Goodfellas, which style is so distinctive and full of gusto that it's kind of hard to realize that this film owns a Best Director Award and Goodfellas does not.

Despite all of this, the film is far from generic fare. Compare it to Live Free or Die and Even Money, two films from 2006 that nobody remembers, nor hasn't even heard of. It's a blessing that we have Scorsese either way, even if some of his films don't stand out as much as others. Execution, is what makes this film a great one despite it's underwhelming story. It's a very tense, gripping, and well-crafted crime thriller, and often really does feel like The acting here is very good, as it's one of the movies that made me realize that Leonardo DiCaprio can act very well. And yes, I do believe that Martin Scorsese's direction is substantial. There's still plenty of music placed perfectly here, as well as plenty of funny dialogue, grittiness, and brutal depiction of violence. Not one of his best, but it stands out rather well anyway.

Don't believe the hype. This is certainly not his best film. In my opinion, this isn't even Scorsese's best of the 00's, as both Gangs of New York and The Aviator stake up much better territory, and are both much more interesting. But still, if you are looking for another great film from one of America's most well known Directors, check it out anyway.

  • After the Sunset may not be the greatest jewel-heist caper comedy ever made, but it sure is easy on the eyes. Shifting back into his crowd-pleasing Rush Hour mode, director Brett Ratner kicks off the action with a rousing chase scene that pretty much describes the entire film: utter nonsense, but adequately enjoyable. Things get very sunny thereafter, when FBI agent Woody Harrelson lands in the Bahamas to track down ace diamond thief Pierce Brosnan and his lovely accomplice Salma Hayek, whom he suspects of planning their next big heist on a cruise ship. A Bahamian gangster (Don Cheadle) wants in on the action, and the whole thing's about as fluffy as an Elmo doll and just as harmless, especially when you consider Hayek's revealing wardrobe (which, thankfully, distracts from Brosnan's less-than-Bond-like physique). There's an abundance of witty banter between everyone, and the tropical locations make After the Sunset a balmy, vicarious vacation. Critics weren't exactly kind to this breezy dose of popcorn entertainment, but it's an agreeable time-killer and an instant cure for seasonal affective disorder, even if the comedic chemistry leaves something to be desired.

  • I loved this little movie. It is not the caliber of Gone with the Wind or The Green Mile but I thought it was a fun little movie. Good acting. The story really draws you in and then plays with you a little. Great scenery throughout the movie too! I recommend this movie whole-heartedly!! (Especially if you live in a cold place and it is the middle of winter. )

  • They Should Have Aimed Higher - K. pratt - Midwest USA
The time you spend watching this movie will probably be enjoyable and perfectly pleasant. The location scenery in The Bahamas is absolutely fantastic. The characters are charming and the plot is light-hearted and amusing. There are problems that may arise, however, once the film is over and you've switched off your player.

The script is really quite one-dimensional. Nothing whatsoever is happening beneath the surface. Once you know how the story ends, you know absolutely everything there is to know.

The characters in this movie are also one-dimensional. They seem to have no "back-story." They exist simply to move the plot along and they have no reality in any other way. We really don't know anything about them. They're dummies.

Pierce Brosnan plays a roguish thief in his patented manner and that's all he bothers doing. It was a very easy paycheck for him to earn. Woody Harrelson's portrayal of a rascally FBI agent is also a trademarked role for him. Salma Hayek is beautiful to look at, but her character is not a person.

This is a fine flick to kill some time with. Maybe that's what you want and maybe it isn't.

  • Monsoon India s god of life is a fascinating chronicle of how the wild animals of India cope with the hardship of summer and how the arrival of the monsoon transforms their lives and the land they live in. The monsoon is a great benefactor that replenishes water and rejuvenates the land. But sometimes it can also overwhelm with its abundance, unleashing floods that cause death and destruction. In India s far north east, the rare great Indian rhinoceros lives on a flood plain that swings between the extremes of too little water... and too much. Lying to the south of the great Brahmaputra river, the rhino s home is literally reshaped by the force of every monsoon. As the summer advances, and the waterholes shrink, the normally solitary rhinos are forced together into tiny wallows to escape the heat. The days drag on with little respite and tempers flare as the great beasts jostle for space. When the summer monsoon finally arrives after weeks of anticipation, it makes its first landfall not in the north east, but at the tip of southern India. In the fire-ravaged forests of south India elephants squeal and trumpet when the first thunder showers pelt down. As the waves of dark cloud sweep further inland, they release most of their load over the rainforest-covered slopes of the Western Ghats mountains, drenching the forest floor and awakening all manner of life. Travancore tortoises emerge from hiding and the males battle it out for mating rights. Brightly coloured giant centipedes prowl the forest floor in search of food, and up in the canopy lion-tailed macaques enjoy the special fruits of the monsoon. On the misty, windswept mountain tops, the Nilgiri tahr, a species of rare wild goat, prepare for their annual rut. When the females come into heat they are chased relentlessly by the males, until the last female in the herd has mated. The monsoon does not arrive everywhere in India at once. While the monsoon rains lash south-west India, north India continues to reel under a heat wave. Temperatures in Rajasthan soar above 120 F. The heat drives the animals to rapidly shrinking water holes. Rhesus macaques dive headlong into the water and tigers soak in forest pools. But not everyone can afford to play or relax. Despite the crippling heat a tigress with two large cubs is constantly on the hunt for food. The dry, open forest makes concealment difficult and stalking almost impossible, but along the shores of an enchanting lake, where prey animals gather to feed and drink, there is plenty of food to be had. The tigress must use all her cunning if her cubs are to survive. Distant thunder and a smell of rain drives courting peacocks into a frenzy, and under cover of darkness, the monsoon arrives in Rajasthan. Deep underground, a large female python sits tightly coiled around her clutch of eggs. She laid them sixty days ago to hatch with the monsoon. Now, with the arrival of the rains, her young will have no trouble fending for themselves.

  • Being an avid horror freak for nearly four decades now I wish to throw my two cents in...

I love them all! The classics (Dracula & Frankenstein) with such greats as Bela Lugosi and Boris Kaloff, the 80's slasher flicks ( A nightmare on Elm St; Friday the 13th, Halloween), modern day throwbacks such as The devil's Rejects (which has become one of my all time favorites...Gotta love Rob Zombie!), Two thumbs up to certain remakes such as The Texas Chainsaw massacre & Halloween (Rob again!),By the way the TCM...The beginning, is another of my favorites, and last but not least the newer kidnap/torture genre such as (Saw, Hostel, Turistas).

That being said I have always held a certain special place for monsters, Vampires & Werewolves to be precise, in my heart. Back in 1981 two legendary werewolf movies came out. Of course I'm talking about The Howling directed by Joe Dante & Creature effects by Rob Bottin and An American Werewolf in London, Directed by John Landis and Special effects by Bottins mentor Rick Baker. These two movies held the title for the best ever created until now...

The story plot & special effects make these movies, in my opinion, instant classics! A must watch for any horror/action fan. The cast is awesome with Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as the definitive heroin, a kickass Vampire with a matrix (Trinity) feel to her, coupled with an excellent portrayal by Bill Nighly (Viktor)and rounded off by Lucian (Played by Micheal Sheen).

So if you love the traditional monsters with modern day high impact, non stop action and love being dazzled by 21st century special effects , then these movies are for you...A must watch!

My son loves these movies! Thank You - D. Niccum - THOMPSON
These movies are excatly what was said. They were used and you couldn't even tell. They play and look like they are new. I would definatly buy movies this way again.

  • Under-rated - Bill A. - Indianapolis, IN
This if for the blu-ray trilogy. I would give this set 3.5 stars, but my phone's only letting me do whole stars...

I've come to appreciate these films more over time; especially after seeing previews of Twilight. The art direction & costumes are superb. The story in the 3rd film, Rise of the Lycans, is by far my favorite, even without Kate Beckinsale; it feels complete, important & epic. Bill Nighy does a great job, and I'm to the point where I'm not as bothered by Michael Sheen's bulging-eye business. All of the films do a good job setting up and executing the action sequences. Even if they are a bit predictable, it's fun to watch it play out, and to wait for the other shoe to drop (or half a head).

Rise of the Lycans is also the best looking of the 3 on blu-ray; the costumes are the most ornate of the series, and I'm guessing it was shot 100% digital; the other 2 movies are clear but not quite as sharp. All of the films have grain, either due to the low lighting, or intentional effect; doesn't bother me.

I actually exchanged this set, due to a significant hang-up in Lycan's interactive menu. The disc's laminant was too thin, and the digital etchings were exposed to open air (not ideal). As it turned out, the lamination was not the issue; my new disc looked like it was manufactured correctly, but still got hung up. I researched it online and found out I had to upgrade my blu-ray player's firmware. I have an older player - a Samsung BD-P1500. Once I updated the firmware, the hang-up was gone.

I'd recommend this series to anyone who likes Lord of the Rings, or blood-soaked historical epics in general.

  • The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold.

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. Kim

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a truly epic movie, with thrills, excitement, and emotion, that never disappoints and really brings the Wizarding World to life. This film really entertained me, and is a welcome restoration of the Potter magic for anyone who disliked the dreary, overly-depressing feel of "Prisoner of Azkaban".

I was fortunate enough to see this film on its opening day of November 18, 2005, and to this day, five years on, I still think it is one of the best out of all the films and my favorite movie out of the whole series. As a humongous fan of the books and the first two films, I wasn't going to miss seeing this one, and was given a pleasant surprise upon discovering how good it was.

It's no easy feat adapting a hulking 734-page novel to a workable two-and-a-half-hour production that doesn't lag nor run by too quickly and feel rushed, but the filmmakers did a splendid job in balancing things out so you don't feel as if the whole thing has been butchered. It keeps moving, but does not go at such a break-neck speed as films five and six do that there isn't time to relax and enjoy things like the music, the scenery, or the more intimate interactions between characters.

Obviously, with a book that large, you're going to have to cut out something, and I for one feel that the proper choices were made in doing away with several rather pointless sub-plots (Hermione's S.P.E.W initiative, for example, which I was glad was cut because it made her seem a little childish and annoying; or the inclusion of Ludo Bagman, which made the it longer than it should have been) to cut out some time. Even with cuts, it stays surprisingly faithful, so it won't disappoint fans, and it successfully retains the novel's spirit while also managing to remake itself into a film that flows nicely and may even rival the book.

Nothing can be entirely flawless, but "Goblet" comes close. Everything was done right, from the pacing to the casting to the music to the directorial decision. In short, one couldn't ask for a better film. The director, Mike Newell, as well as the screenwriter Steven Kloves, really chose to emphasize the real feeling of a British boarding school, as well as increase the drama of the darkness concerning Voldemort's return to power. The TriWizard Tournament is expanded to heroic proportions, and is one-hundred times more exciting than what was originally written, which makes watching this film even more interesting to anyone who is already familiar with the book.

The visual look of the film is amazing, and even better than what I could have imagined. Hogwarts has this golden glow to it, and feels incredibly warm and cozy, the kind of place you always imagined it to be, but up till this point had never seen before in any of the previous films. The cinematography is beautiful, and the special effects are perhaps the most effective we've seen in any of the films.

The music Patrick Doyle has written is breathtaking. With this score, he's created another gem. It is right up there with John Williams in the magic department, but is more tuneful and romantic. Let's just say you might be humming the songs right out of the theatre.

As far as acting goes, everyone, the adult actors included, are better than ever. After five years, everyone seems to have really slipped imperceptibly into their characters, so that it's difficult to separate the performance from the reality. The younger actors, particularly the three main stars, have really improved in the capabilities, and give astounding performances that are filled with insight and pathos.

Daniel Radcliffe especially has come a long way from the wide-eyed little 11-year-old he was when the series started. I thought his performance in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" was a little stilted and lacking, even in comparison with the first two films, in which he was very good. Here, he brings a sensitivity and courageousness to Harry that even J.K. Rowling hasn't been able to put across as well. Harry still has his flaws, but he is easier to relate to. He is also a bit smarter, which was a great improvement; he's too dull in the books and gets on your nerves after a while because of his sheer stupidity!

Ralph Fiennes gives a chilling performance as Lord Voldemort, and if you aren't as creeped out as I was seeing him in full regalia, then you'd better go back and watch the scene in the graveyard a few more times.

There is absolutely nothing I can find that I didn't like about this film, except the inclusion of the heavy rock numbers during the Yule Ball scenes (I found them terribly out of place, even though the Weird Sisters band were included in the novel; but then again, I'm not one of those people who enjoys that sort of music), but aside from that, everything else was perfect, and I highly recommend this film.

Did anyone else notice some deeply imbedded cultural stereotypes? - Igor Biryukov - New Haven, CT
This is the only Harry Potter film with an "international" twist. Watching and analyzing the film we can get insights on how the English-speaking world relate to the other three great European cultures - the German, the Russian and the French. While the French in the movie are not disguised, the German and the Russian cultures are "magically" fused into one - they are thinly veiled as the Bulgarians of the Durmstrang Institute. I am referring to the central event of the movie - the so-called Triwizard Tournament which is a magical contest between the wizarding schools of Europe - the Hogwarts, the Durmstrang Institute of "the North", and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.

The Beauxbatons Academy of Magic represents the Francophone culture in the Harry Potter Universe. They have a soft touch and a certain "je ne sais quoi". Their Headmaster is Madame Maxime is very tall and looks vaguely like Charles de Gaulle. The name "Beaux bâtons" is French for "beautiful wands". But with the other school - the Durmstrang Institute - things are more complicated.
The name indicates "Sturm und Drang", a German term for "emotional turmoil", a codeword for the German romanticism. The students are all boys with military-style buzzcut, apparently meaning to represent the Prussian militarism during Word War I. The names like Viktor Krum are Germanic. Bur their headmaster's name Igor Karkaroff is undoubtedly Russian. He is portrayed as an unpleasant and brutish character with bad teeth looking like someone who just walked out the "Ivan the Terrible" movie try-outs for the mad Tsar Ivan. The Prussians and Russians are fused together in an unpleasant cocktail.

The Durmstrang's coat of arms features a double headed eagle, indicating that the school may be located in the Russian or Austro-Hungarian Empire. Victor Krum attended the "Yule Ball" with Hermione Granger looking like the young Wilhelm II wearing the Austrian hussar regiment uniform. Kaiser Wilhelm's middle name was Viktor, by the way.

We are shown how the "Anglo-Saxons" successfully compete with other cultures. How they do it? Well, with their honesty, pragmatism, and principle of "fair-play" boosted by Harry Potter magical powers. They overcome the "la finesse" of the South and "la ruse" of the Northerners - the Russo-Germans. They triumphed because the others are lacking some ingredient or another (for example, intelligence). It's all "de bonne guerre", good fun, and "Karkaroff" is a clever though nonsensical name for a Russian ("Kar-Kar" is a sound made by "Russian" crows, as opposite to "Caw-Caw" in the English-speaking countries). But stereotypes are easily discernable. You ask, so what? My point is that the ideology, which goes hand in glove with cultural stereotypes, is everywhere. Even in movies for kids.

  • Deatheaters and *gasp* Dates! - Kona - Emerald City
Now in his fourth year at school, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) becomes unwittingly involved in the infamous "Tri-Wizard Tournament," wherein champions from Hogwarts and two visiting wizard schools face frightening challenges in the hope of winning eternal glory. With help from his buddies Ron and Hermione, Harry battles dragons, survives underwater, and faces a terrifying maze. Equally scary for him: He must choose a date for the Yule Ball. He has his eyes on the lovely Cho Chang but is too shy to ask her. Lord Voldemort and his Deatheaters play a prominent part in this installment as Harry faces a life and death duel.

The movie is very well written and the acting is good, too. The three kids are now playing 14-year olds and are showing a greater range of emotions. There is much humor when it comes to dealing with the opposite sex, a talent the usually capable Harry seems to lack. Watching the three at the Yule Ball is sweet and awful, as these things tend to be at that age.

The soundtrack and special effects are wonderful as usual and the suspenseful story is acceptable and enjoyable for children over eight as well as older audiences. If you're a Potter fan, you're sure to enjoy "Goblet of Fire." This is the best of the series so far and definitely lives up to all expectations.

  • How is the an ultimate edition if NO EXTENDED version?!? - klovess -
Like many of you who purchased the first two ultimate editions at a pretty penny, i was expecting extended editions of movies 3 and 4. What a disappointment! Were the big wigs at WB thinking that their fans would triple dip editions when they bring out all films in one super ultimate collection? I already owned all of the HP on Blu, but sold them when i started buying the Ultimate editions. I will NOT be purchasing 3 and 4. Very poor on WB's part to say its ultimate, and include 8 hours of bonus materials, but not the few extra scenes that regularly show on TV. Very poor indeed.
