  • After reading the previous reviews, it was with trepidation that I ordered this anyway. I am very glad I did. I was ready to be disappointed when I popped it in, anticipating the disc would not play back per the other reviews. I am using a PS3 with the latest firmware, and it plays back with no problem. Plays the promotional trailer, brings up the menu, lets you select your options, etc. BTW, I ordered through a reseller on Amazon, so not sure if that makes a difference which inventory you get the disc from.

The disc itself displays in 1080i format, and I thought the picture looked pretty good. It wasn't awe inspiring, as some 1080p discs I've seen, but pretty good picture quality nonetheless. It was not grainy or anything like that. As for audio, it does have a lossless audio option - DTS-HD MA. All speaker channels worked fine with this option. The concert itself features some great songs, including Commodores hits, I believe 22 songs in all. Also has a behind the scenes special, as well as 2 music videos.

If you're on the fence, give the BluRay a try. If you get a working copy, it's a very nice piece to add to your music collection.

The BD does not play... - mario fernandes - Ciudad del Este, Paraguay
I think it has a serious recording problem. My player is a Denon 3800BDCI and the BD just plays the trailer and then it stop... Well, I was refunded by Amazon but I lost money...

  • Great DVD - Michael Sedillo - Albuqueque
I had been waiting a long time for Lionel Richie to put out a concert DVD. I saw him in concert in Albuquerque a few years ago and he put on one of the best concerts I had ever seen. I purchased the Lionel Richie Paris Blue Ray DVD and enjoyed it very much. Lionel is an awsome entertainer and has a way of engaging his audience in every concert. His songs brought back a lot of great memories.

  • Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • I am a HUGE fan of CS Lewis Narnia Chronicles. I read them as a child and reread them routinely. This second production (Prince Caspian) took some liberties I didn't really care for, but in a general way it was good. IF you have kids, FIRST try to get them to read the books. I can't imagine seeing these movies without having read them. CS Lewis is also the author of many GREAT Christian books.'Screwtape Letters' is another GREAT book by Mr. Lewis and has a lot of humor, along with very clear issues with the "other side" for us older children.

Very enjoyable movie that my family will enjoy over and over. It was a great movie for family movie night.

  • WARNING! Disney has disabled BD-Live on this and other older titles! - Mel Beckman - Oxnard not just a pretty name, CA United States
Others here report well on the serious problems with this movie's production: deviations from Lewis' original plot, fabrication of non-existent scenes, and corruption of the characters' motives and personalities. You should also be aware that Disney has disabled the BD-Live content with no explanation or recourse, other than returning the disc. Yet Disney continues to advertise the BD-Live features on its site.

The problem is that all the BD-Live features require registering an account on the Disney site, but Disney has deliberately removed the registration process, effectively locking out anyone not already registered. This constitutes false advertising, in my opinion, but Disney refuses to either correct its advertising or restore registration.

I both emailed and called Disney, and they acknowledge the problem but refuse to restore access. Here is the email response I received:

"With the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Disney BD-Live Network has undergone several changes. With these changes, there is no longer an option to register for the BD-Live Network. The features on future Blu-ray titles will not require registration. Past Blu-ray titles will be changing with future updates to eliminate registration enabled features. You will still be able to access the BD-Live Network as a guest if the registration is not completed. If you have any further questions, please call us at 1-800-723-4763, Mondays 9:30-7:30 and Tuesday through Friday 9:30-6:30 CST for assistance."

Disney's statement "You will still be able to access the BD-Live Network as a guest if the registration is not completed" is disingenuous: it applies only to FUTURE titles, not this one or others of its vintage, according to the Disney rep I spoke with. You're completely locked out of BD-Live on the Prince Caspian Narnia BD (and all BDs prior to Snow White).

I asked Disney how anyone can trust them not to renege on its BD-Live content promises again on the latest titles. They had no answer. Why Disney is cheating its customers is a mystery. It can't possibly cost anything significant to maintain a registration process. This seems another example of a heartless Disney driven by greed and lacking even rudimentary business ethics.

    Puccini: Edgar [Blu-ray]

  • Original rediscovered Puccini Opera! A fake death, a perverse woman and a pure woman, a man torn between them, a murder: the story of Edgar, Giacomo Puccini's second opera, is full of dramatic turns of events. Arthaus Musik presents this powerful and tragic opera now in a version which was count for lost for nearly 120 years. For the fi rst time the original version in four acts of Edgar by Giacomo Puccini was staged at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 2008. Thanks to the rediscovery of the manuscript score, after 119 years since the fi rst and only performance in Milan in 1889 and after numerous versions condensing the opera in three acts, it will be again possible to experience the original opera that Puccini wrote. It was only when the American Puccini expert Linda B. Fairtile began reconstructing the original orchestration of the almost 40-minute fi nal act that the composer's granddaughter, Simonetta Puccini, came up with the intact score. José Cura, acclaimed all over the world for his intense interpretations, is Edgar. His rich and brilliant tenor voice, together with his fascinating stage presence, make him one of the most charismatic and sought-after artists in the world. With him, two prima donnas, two artists of great charm and with skyrocketing careers: the Italian soprano Amarilli Nizza and the Russian mezzo-soprano Julia Gertseva.

  • Puccini: Edgar [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Before going any further, I would suggest you read the extensive and thorough review by G.P. Padillo for the DVD release of this performance. He has gone into great detail and provides an excellent outline of the opera and its history. I am writing this review, due to some differences in perception of the work and its performance.

It has been stated, in other sources, that Puccini lacked the ability to handle the drama of a story such as Edgar. In fact, the fault lies with the libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, as the story of Edgar bears weaknesses and some degree of illogicality in its structure. In the total perspective of the complete four act work that has now been returned to us, Puccini has provided an opera with a relatively good dramatic arc, and an opera that contains a good complement of attractive arias, an especially beautiful duet, and a large quota of excellent and appealing chorus work.

As other reviews have stated, the performance does not commence well. I would not say it takes the entire first act for everyone to get into their stride, but it takes a good 20 minutes at the least, and this includes the strings, which is a body that could be better coordinated in these early stages. But it all settles down into quite excellent performances from all soloists (I suspect it was recorded at one performance, rather than the usual two or three, allowing editing together the best sections). In this fairly lengthy work, it is well worthwhile putting up with the shaky start for all that follows.

The work starts slowly, sounding to me initially as if it could be more in the vein of "Rondine" , but Puccini manages his flawed libretto and progressively builds the dramatic intensity and flow of the opera, reaching a powerful and moving conclusion to what proves to be a quite dramatic work. After the shaky beginnings, all of the artists, as mentiond, perform well, with José Cura outstanding in his lead role as Edgar. Special mention should also go to the chorus. This work is laden with quite a lot of chorus singing, and the chorus members are very well up to the demands of the work -- something important for this opera if it is going to "come off".

Whilst I might look forward to a production with slightly higher standards in most departments, all aspects here are sufficiently good to give a competent presentation of a work that we have been denied for far too long.

On the technical side, both lighting, photography and editing seemed to speak more of a film background rather than recording stage productions, but while giving a different look, this aspect did not spoil the production in any way for me. There are a few Blu--ray releases that have a marginally sharper image, but this is still in the very good class. Sound, which is also of a high standard, is available in PCM stereo, as well as DTS--HD Master Audio 7.1. Image is 16:9.

So, as I said, while we may wish for a production at a slightly higher standard, after much reflection, I gave five stars as the production shows a well-unified concept, providing a worthwhile performance of an opera none of us has ever seen, yet should never have been lost. Despite the faults, when the performance came to an end, my immediate reaction was that I wanted to watch it all over again straight away. If you love Puccini, then buy this, forgive it its weaknesses, considering its entirety rather than picking at odd places. I think if viewed and listened to in this way, that is, as the complete work, rather than the sum of its parts, you will be very pleased to have it added to your collection.

    Very good - F. Castilho -

I've learned not to expect of the current singers the performance of the singers from decades past. Lack passion! Taking this in consideration,
this is a wonderful recording, well sung and very suitable production.

  • Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a man who has married for money and is terribly disillusioned with his life. When forced to go to a dinner party he does not want to attend, he throws a temper tantrum and returns home early. When driving Marianne (Anna Karina), the babysitter, back home, they fall in love and decide to run away from Paris. They embark on a series of escapades that begins with running illegal arms for extra cash and runs the gamut: love, death, ennui, boat chases, murder, betrayal, revenge, lost cash, and almost anything else you can think of, and all with a sense of reality that is an interesting contrast to the typical American film. Jean-Luc Godard (Breathless, Alphaville) blends different genres with great success and achieves moments of cinematic poetry in this quasi-epic of modern malaise. Also a cameo by the Hollywood director Samuel Fuller is something to watch for. Be aware that Godard is for people seriously interested in cinematic art. --James McGrath

  • Pierrot Le Fou [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Easily (and I mean that in the boldest of senses) one of my favorite films of all time, `Pierrot le Fou' is cinematic perfection personified. There isn't a single moment of this film that doesn't fill me with every emotion needed to captivate and just thrust me into a sensory overdose. From the lush sets to the engaged performances to the witty banter to the sharply edited sequences to the ravishingly spectacular script, `Pierrot le Fou' is, in a word, perfect.

    Enough gushing already.

The film tells the story of a dissatisfied husband who has married solely for money, not for love, and thus embarks on a passion filled escapade with the babysitter. Ferdinand uninspired by his existence, but Marianne promises (with her bewitching walk and `come-hither' eyes) a life free from regret. He sees a future that encompasses everything his current state is lacking, and so he runs off with her, setting their sights on Paris (who wouldn't?). Things get sticky along the way, and the two find themselves engaged in acts of random violence they never imagined was their destiny. Their adventure turns dangerous and soon they are left with nothing left to do but jump right into the fire.

The very thought of this movie makes me want to drop to my hands and knees and perform an act of worship.

I have and always will be an advocate for French cinema, especially the 60's new wave campaigned by the likes of Francois Truffaut and my personal favorite film director (of all time) Jean-Luc Godard. `Pierrot le Fou' capitalizes on everything I find so enthralling about French new wave. There is the obvious weighty themes but they are presented in an enchantingly jovial tone that keeps the audience entertained, even in the throes of crisis. The colorful sets only serve as slick compliments to the films grounded performances (Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina were never better) and the films sharp editing helps embellish the complexities of the films plot.

In the end, `Pierrot le Fou' is about our personal convictions and the need, as people, to be invested in our own destiny.

While one can easily point to the films sporadic delivery and ascertain that it is merely an `art' film, one would be wrong in simply dismissing it for its entertainment value alone. The film, for me, captures elements from all sides of the cinematic spectrum. The film is deeply unsettling when you start to take its elements seriously (especially the eventualities contained in the films conclusion), which adds a completely different layer to the films tone. The film is undeniably entertaining, which is not something many `art' films can attest to being. Most people label `art' films as boring and needlessly complex (I'm not talking about myself here) but this film, which is most certainly an `art' film, is far from either. There is a rich poignancy here that transcends the films release date, and there is an enigmatic atmosphere that only helps elevate the films importance.

It is fresh, it is exciting, it is dangerous, it is meaningful, and it is loud, abrasive and epic in every sense of the word. It is cinema; cut, paste and send.

    Blu-Ray Specific Review - Z. Burke -
So, the movie itself is beyond words, something to be experienced.
Whether or not that experience is worthy anything to you will vary by person, but I for one, enjoyed it immensely.

    It escapes description.

As far as the quality of the Blu-Ray, it was superb. I was amazed by how clean and clear a picture (as well as audio) the movie had,
both because of its age and the technology associated with films of that period. Criterion has done a masterful job with this edition,
and I couldn't have been more pleased with its presentation. Of course, the beautiful cinematography helps out, too.

Give it a shot, it defied everything I thought it would be. I don't think I'll ever see anything else like it.

The other transfers of this film are pretty average quality, but the Criterion collection transfer is fantastic. The most notable difference is the subtitles have been improved and translated properly. Of course this means the profanity is more accurate too, though I am not offended!

  • The Quick and the Dead [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Movie - 4.5

Something I've always liked about a majority of Sam Raimi's films is their ability to entertain. The Evil Dead movies, Darkman, the Spider-man trilogy, and Drag Me to Hell are all filled with just the right balance of quirks, style, and enough story/character depth to keep me engrossed within those universes. The Quick and the Dead is something of a divergence from all of Raimi's other fantasy-based action titles. There's no magic book, ghouls, radioactive spiders, crazed supervillains, or goat demons coming for your soul in this. It's a straight-up revenge-themed spaghetti western brimming with characters, drama, and good ole fashioned shootouts. There are three things in particular I think make this a very entertaining film. First, is Sharon Stone. I was only a kid when Sharon Stone was "hot stuff" in Hollywood, and I didn't really know what that meant at the time (having not figured out the "birds and the bees" yet). But wow, after seeing this and what little bits I can remember of her throughout her other mid-'90s titles, I can certainly see the kind of sex appeal she had. Having her as the protagonist does double for me in that 1) it gives me some great eye candy, and 2) perpetuates my all-time favorite theme in vengeance (and through a sexy vessel, at that). The second thing I really like is the rest of the cast. With established and eventual talent like Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Gary Sinise, Pat Hingle, Lance Henriksen, and Keith David, it's an unequivocal star-studded lineup, each of who play their respective personalities to the best of their abilities and to the limits they have written on paper. And lastly, by far my favorite aspect of the movie is the photography. Dante Spinotti's angular framing and quick zooming really give the film a kind of cinematic flare and pizazz, something you just don't see anymore in a lot of westerns. While the narrative is pretty cookie-cutter and the characters fairly one-dimensional, it's an entertaining piece of fiction, nonetheless.

    Video - 4.0

Prior to this BD viewing, my experiences with Q&D is pretty limited to either cable TV or VHS, so it's safe to say I have little source material to use for comparison. But for what it is today, Sony presents Q&D with a very good picture presentation. Colors range between not-quite-dull and purposely-washed-out, but make for some great aesthetic choices. There's an especially subtle hint of orange during scenes with either lots of sand in the background or sunlight shining on peoples' faces for that dramatic effect. Image detail overall is pretty sharp with healthy levels of contrast and blacks that never seem to crush or distract. Set design, costuming, and prop work are probably the elements that will stick out the most, adding a very authentic feel to the film. The are some artifacts and debris here and there, but it's nothing overly messy in relation to other titles I've seen on BD from around that time.

    Audio - 4.5

Growing up, my interpretation of westerns had always been of a sheriff versus a bandit in some kind of gunslinger's duel outside of a tavern or just at the edge of town at either dawn or dusk. With this movie, I get just that, and plenty of it. As more of escapist entertainment than any kind of meaningful story, Q&D's main drive is through its action sequences and tension building up to those moments. With that said, the sound design benefits a lot from this TrueHD track. Background noise throughout the saloons and town activities flood the front and rear speakers, while dead silence casts a suspenseful grip in the moments before a quick draw. Dialogue is perfect and never gets muffled through all the action, with separation being especially nice. The score by Alan Silvestri helps to maintain a nice pace to the film and really gives it that old-school "western" feel with a good amount of brass and guitar. Gunshots are easily the showcase of the track, providing with as quick and precise a sound as the drawers themselves. Horse hooves on the dirt, saloon doors, spurs jingling, even the clicking of hammers all possess a very clear reproduction of sound. The only thing lacking, really, is a strong presence of LFEs. Around the end of the movie there's one scene that really triggers the sub, but it doesn't do enough to give the overall track a real balance. Still, though, everything else is pretty near-reference.

    Overall - 4.5

I still haven't seen a whole lot of westerns to this date. Stuff like Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma make for some great story-telling, while stuff like Appoloosa and The Quick and the Dead make more for quick entertainment. But regardless, I have to say westerns do have their charm. Q&D is a short, little film that manages to entertain me to great bounds thanks in huge part to Sam Raimi's direction, the production design team, and a really great cast of actors. The video is very good, and the sound is excellent. The Quick and the Dead comes highly recommended.

  • Green Lantern: First Flight [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • The origin plot of Green Lntern is different than the comic one of teh 1960's ( I owned it at one time). It did not introduce the Guardians until years later. The same with Sinestro and the others. Killing off the Green Lantern force was also a great departure from the original story line. But if you knew nothing about him the movie was a passable although very convoluted story which would have been better had it been fleshed out and not made the earth green lantern look as if he knew nothing about the ring or its powers.
True followers of Green Lantern will find the comics or read them on line and see what I mean. It was enjoyable but not satisfying to someone who has a backround to the characters foibles.

Good flick, but consistency wouldn't hurt. - Isaac J. Mahoney -
First Flight covers the Green Lantern basics well, but those who are unfamiliar with GL will probably be confused near the end. It introduces the setting nicely; Hal Jordan as the first human, Sinestro as the rising villain, the GL Corps, the Green Element, and the Guardians as a frustratingly ineffective authority. However, they seem to leave their explanations at half-mast, telling you just enough so you understand but not enough to develop it into something really unique and interesting. It's a little like "here's the ring, here's the battery, it's powered by this green rock. Got it? Let's go kick alien butt!" Seeing as it takes place almost entirely in outer space, First Flight is unique when compared to the other animated features. I liked the character development, I really believed it was Hal Jordan's human ingenuity and determination that made him so powerful. Sinestro is handled very well and his character arc is one of the best things in the film.

While an entertaining space opera adventure, First Flight simply lacks the congruency to make it a great animated feature. I was willing to cut it some slack, but my wife made a good argument that the audience needed more explanation about how the Green Lantern and Yellow Lantern batteries work, how they can fly around and shoot stuff, and how they're related to the individual rings themselves. Apparently this discrepancy is because First Flight draws on knowledge and events from the comic series, which is okay, but it goes largely unexplained. Don't get me wrong, First Flight is entertaining and a fun watch, but some more consistency wouldn't have hurt.

I'll start by saying I'm not a follower of the Green Lantern comics and hence didn't sit down to watch the movie with any pre-existing expectations or background (neither did my 4 and 6 year old). I thought it was entertaining, visually well done, and what I expected and wanted for the price. The kids loved it and will watch it several times. So for me it was worth it and I would recommend it to others just wanting an animated super hero flick you as an adult can sit and watch with younger kids.

  • Thrill-seeking billionaire Thomas Crown (Brosnan) loves nothing more than courting disaster and winning! So when his world becomes too stiflingly safe, he pulls off his boldest stunt ever: stealing a priceless painting in broad daylight from one of Manhattan's most heavily guarded museums. But his post-heist excitement soon pales beside an even greater challenge: Catherine Banning (Russo). A beautiful insurance investigator hired to retrieve the artwork, Catherine's every bit as intelligent, cunning and hungry for adventure as he is. And just when Thomas realizes he's finally met his match, she skillfully leads him into a daring game of cat and mouse that's more intoxicating and dangerous than anything either of them has ever experienced before!

  • The Thomas Crown Affair (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) Reviews By Customers
  • I really hate how Amazon lumps in VHS, DVD and Blu-ray together. Often, Blu-ray films have unique problems that occur with transferring, given the technology is fairly recent. You then end up browsing all of the reviews (tossing aside the DVD Ebert reviewers out there) to figure out:

    1) Is it worth getting on blu-ray if I already own it?
    and
    2) How is the quality of the Blu-ray?

The second being most important, I can say that even though reviewers like A.Dent complain that the Blu-ray "skips" or is juddery in some fashion, I can assure you it is not (or at least not in the disc by design). I believe that the people on here who complain of skipping either 1) received faulty discs or 2) the manufacturer re-processed it since to fix the errors and I ended up with that version. I almost didn't purchase this on Blu-ray based on what A.Dent and one other reviewer stated, and I want to ease people's minds: the Blu-ray version is great and mine plays flawlessly. Seeing Brosnan's minute facial features/smirks/fake-surprise in high-def really gets you into his character that much more.

To the former question of is it worth getting on Blu-ray, I can't tell you. We all know action movies are always worth the upgrade, but I honestly just believe you're going to be replacing it at some point and I'm somewhat of an HD purist and notice the difference even in up-converted DVDs. So if you already own it, maybe another movie you don't own is a priority. But it's only .99 (or so, depending on the day), so it's not a gigantic investment. Many of us are Blu-ray-ifying all of our old libraries, and this movie is one that's worth keeping around for a while. (I have several movies that I don't like enough to even own on DVD -- don't ask why I own them -- that I'll let sink into the great beyond of cassette tapes VHS).

This movie is one of the few that appeals to both sexes without one taking a sacrifice. Every bachelor pad should have it in stock!

Decent blu ray transfer decent but the disc skips and absolutely no extras - Kevin - Buffalo, NY
This is a good movie and the blu ray transfer of it is pretty good but what I find unacceptable is that while the majority of the movie plays fine, there are a few spots in the beginning where the video gets sort of choppy and it almost looks like you are watching the movie in a very fast stop motion form. This can be seen in the beginning of the movie when Pierce is getting out of his limo and walking into the art gallery. It even continues this way until he sits down at his haystacks painting. It picks up again a minute later in the scene where the security guards are going over the delivery to the museum. After this scene the video jutter seems to stop for the rest of the movie. I have watched a lot of blu ray movies and this is the first blu ray movie where I have experienced this video jutter. The transfer of a movie to blu ray does not have to be perfect for me to want to own it but the fact that this blu ray suffers from the problems with the video I have described makes me want to throw this disc in the garbage. I also want to point out that first I bought this blu ray from Amazon and then I rented it from Netflix and both discs had the same problems in the same places in the movie should it is very unlikely that there is some hardware error with my blu ray player. I think "A.Dent", who wrote the "most helpful critical review" on this site summed up this blu rays problems best and I really just wanted to back this person up on their claims. Movie studios should not release poor quality blu ray movies and then have consumers waste money on these blu ray movies just to make a quick buck. They should get blu ray transfers right the first time or not release them at all. Thanks for nothing MGM, maybe in the future you will release a second blu ray transfer of The Thomas Crown Affair that is of good quality and maybe even throw in a few extras in that version. In sum, don't buy this disc; wait for a better version to come out.

  • In this chilling remake of The Omen ? that is even more terrifying than the original ? man's darkest fears are manifested as an unspeakable terror is unleashed on the world! U.S. diplomat Robert Thorn (Liev Schreiber) substitutes an orphan for his own stillborn baby in order to spare his unknowing wife (Julia Stiles). But after a series of grotesque murders and dire warnings, the Thorns come to the horrifying realization that their child is the son of Satan!

  • The Omen [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • We are living in the Age of Horror Movie Remakes. So, here's yet another classic horror movie that was remade. I'll be honest - this movie didn't need to be remade. The original 1976 movie is a classic in the horror movie genre (see my 5-star review). But, the fact is, it WAS remade an even 30 years after the original came out, whether you like it or not. When it comes to myself, I like it.

The original movie looks vintage 1970s - the cars, the hairstyles, the clothing, the lower technology, etc. The updated remake was released on June 6, 2006, or 06/06/06 - "666", the number of the beast. One noticeable difference with the remake compared to the original is that the remake is an all-around darker movie. The atmosphere and surroundings and overall feel are darker. I think this enhances the effectiveness of the scenes that are meant to be scary. An example is when Robert Thorn meets with Father Brennan under the bridge during the thunderstorm. I found this creepier than how it played out in the original. The thunderstorms during the scene where Thorn is cutting Damien's hair looking for the birthmark add a scariness to the scene. I also like the snowy scenes where Robert Thorn is talking to Bugenhagen and later goes to the cemetery in Cervet with the photographer Keith Jennings.

I found the initial meeting between Thorn and Father Brennan in the lobby was more effective than it was in Thorn's office in the original.

When Father Brennan gets struck by the steel rod that falls down from the top of the church, only a couple of seconds go by from the time he notices the rod until he is actually struck. This is an improvement. In the original movie, a full five seconds goes by from the time Father Brennan notices the rod until he is actually struck. This is ample time for him to scoot out of the way, but he just stands there and watches the rod fall down toward him and he accepts his fate without making an effort to get out of the way.

Another thing I noticed is that the remake took certain scenes and turbo-charged them. An example is the scene at the end of the movie when Robert Thorn is driving with Damien to the church. He's driving recklessly, plowing through gates, skidding and spinning around, smashing into things, all while Damien was putting up more of a fight in the car than in the original. This is more entertaining than in the original, not that this scene in the original wasn't entertaining. It was.

I think the acting in this remake was a little better than in the original. The acting in the original came across as "wooden" and campy at times. In this remake, there isn't a hint of campiness.

One thing that was added to the remake were the brief appearances of demons dressed in red. That was cool.

Now I want to compare the major characters from the two movies and give my opinion on who was the best...

    Damien:

    Harvey Stephens (1976) or Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (2006)?

    WINNER: It's a tie

Stephens was evil and innocent at the same time, whereas Davey-Fitzpatrick was evil most of the time. I think the 2006 Damien's facial expressions were more evil than the 1976 Damien's. The 1976 Damien really didn't have to try hard to be evil looking. He just was, but in a more subtle way than the 2006 Damien.

    Mrs. Baylock:

Billie Whitelaw (1976) or Mia Farrow (2006)?

    WINNER: Billie Whitelaw

Billie Whitelaw just, I mean JUST edges out Mia Farrow. It's extremely close. Billie Whitelaw had the role of Mrs. Baylock down, plain and simple. She was evil and very convincing. Mia Farrow did an outstanding job as well. Her facial expressions were plain evil. Again, it's very close.

    Father Brennan:

Patrick Troughton (1976) or Pete Postlethwaite (2006)?

    WINNER: Pete Postlethwaite

His acting was a little better. He seemed more suited for the role than Patrick Troughton. He seemed to put more heart and emotion into his words.

    Robert Thorn:

Gregory Peck (1976) or Liev Schreiber (2006)?

    WINNER: Liev Schreiber

Liev Schreiber's acting was better and more convincing and believable than Gregory Peck's. Gregory Peck's acting came across as "wooden" and campy a number of times. He seemed inconsistent throughout the movie, whereas Liev Schreiber was very consistent.

    Katherine Thorn:

Lee Remick (1976) or Julia Stiles (2006)?

    WINNER: Julia Stiles

Lee Remick gave a decent performance, but her acting wasn't believable or convincing in certain scenes compared to Stiles. Stiles seemed to put more heart and soul into her performance.

    Keith Jennings:

David Warner (1976) or David Thewlis (2006)?

    WINNER: It's a tie

Both actors gave good performances, so it's a tie.

    Bugenhagen:

Leo McKern (1976) or Michael Gambon (2006)?

    WINNER: Michael Gambon

His portrayal of the character was slightly better. I realize makeup and camera angles might have something to do with it, but he's the winner.

    Dog at the birthday party:

The Rottweiler (1976) or the German Shepherd (2006)?

    WINNER: German Shepherd

The German Shepherd looked more fierce and evil than the Rottweiler, plain and simple.

    What about the musical score?

Jerry Goldsmith (1976) or Marco Beltrami (2006)?

    WINNER:

    Jerry Goldsmith

Goldsmith's score is legendary, one of the great horror movie scores ever. However, Beltrami's score is also very good and did an adequate job in the remake.

So there you go. I'm a fan of the remake of The Omen. As I said, it's one of the few horror movie remakes I like. How do I compare it to the original? It's just as good, so I give this remake the same 5-star rating I gave the original.

The Omen - Arnita D. Brown - USA
Robert Thorn is a senior American diplomat whose wife, Katherine, endures a difficult delivery where their newborn child has died. Thorn knows the news will devastate Katherine, who had suffered two previous miscarriages. The hospital priest presents Thorn with another child born that night, whose mother died in childbirth. The priest compels Thorn to take the infant boy as his own; Katherine will never know the truth, and their son, which they name Damien, will be raised as their flesh and blood. As the child turns five, unsettling events begin to occur. Whether you have seen the original or not, see this movie. It is a very good movie, a well-done remake that stays true to the original while adding some more scare to it. The idea of the anti-christ being born on this earth is very scary and this movie brings that possible reality to life once again.

  • I Believe the Word Is Plagiarism. - Austin Somlo - Vincentown, NJ
    Viewed: 3/08
    Rate: 1

3/08: *sigh* Webster's dictionary defines the word plagiarism as "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own: use (another's production) without crediting the source" or "to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source." I don't know what to say when in fact that there is no such thing as plagiarism in Hollywood these days. The remake of The Omen is a lot like the remake of Psycho minus the masturbation scene, and comparing both of them, even though the latter got a rating of `1', the remake of Psycho was better. Watching this turd, The Omen remake is predictably boring because of two reasons: I already saw the original plenty of times (and it was almost word-for-word and I remember it all and there is no fun in it) and nothing seemed to be human about it. There is no creation of real emotion or suspense. It was just fake...fake...fake. Instead of paying the admission price of seeing her to act in anything, I rather want see Julia Stiles be given a Chinese torture. I have a hard time believing in her face because she looks exactly like a teenager in an adult role. Who was the loser that said that Liev Schreiber can play the lead actor? Mia Farrow, your career is officially over. John Moore thought that he was directing a horror flick but instead fails to know what constitutes one. There is an excessive use of thunder throughout the picture, and higher emphasis is placed on the thought of "the gorier, the better." Well, if I must complain, the original, I know it wasn't a great movie, is thousands times better than the remake, and why bother doing a remake when the original had done it already? All in all, The Omen remake is one steaming pile of horsecrap.

Ouran Academy: An institution of extravagance and prestige where learning is secondary to luxury. Haruhi began the year as an out of place scholarship student, but she's found new popularity as a member of the Host Club. Playing the part of a sensitive suitor and wooing the ladies of the school has become a full-time job. Of course, now that Tamaki and the other boys can no longer deny the charms of her girly side, life feels more like a storybook daydream.

  • Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Well the series lives up to its reputation. Its a great watch. I've seen both the Japanese and English dub and I must say that both of them rock. Vic Mignona's reputation proceeds him. Though I think Caitlin Glass's voice at times gets annoying its a great story. Greg Ayers (Kaoru) is amazing.
A young genius has been accepted to the prestigious academy of Ouran where only the wealthy attend school. Haruhi is but a poor girl going to school on the merits of her brain, she dresses sloppily and is a real loner. But the one day seeking refuge she goes into a music room for peace and quite only to find the chaotic host club who attend to the lovely fantasies of young women at the school with their dashing looks. You have Tamaki, the romantic king. Kyoya, the cool type. Honey, the boy lolita type (who is second to the oldest surprisingly when he's so short). Mori the silent and stoic type. And Hikaru and Kaoru the mischievious types. Haruhi ends up breaking a vase that puts her in so much debt she is made to be the dog of the host club attending to their errands until they catch sight of her charms and decide to use her as a host as well... freaking out after they finally discover she's a girl. It is up to Haruhi to make sense in the chaos that is the host club and finish her debt. But will love find a way in the host club?
The only thing I must say that's negative about the series is no darn kiss between our favorite couple nor the ending isn't like the book, then again the manga is yet to end.

Seriously my favorite anime EVER! - Emily - Las Vegas, NV
I usually hate anime. I'm the type of person that complains every time I see a book made into a movie, just because I don't think adaptations do justice to the original work. I'm a big fan of the manga, so I thought I'd give the anime a shot. I was extremely shocked when I began watching. This show is just as good as the manga. It follows the story line, with the addition/subtraction of some plot points and a different Ouran Fair plot. Each of the voice actors (in English and Japanese) do each character justice. The characters themselves are hilarious and diverse. The plot is entertaining. Don't let the pink covering fool you; this show isn't even that girly/shojo-y. The fact that I actually bought the series really says something, especially since I watched the whole series twice through a friend before buying it on Amazon (and I'm super duper frugal). Since buying it, I've watched all the episodes at least two more times, my favorites more. This really is a must have. If I could, I would give this series a higher rating.

  • 10 Things I Hate About You (10th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • After seeing Andrew Keegan on a re-run of "Moesha," I started checking up on what else he'd been up to since "Party of Five" because I hadn't really seen him in anything outside of that and "Camp Nowhere." I'd heard of this movie but never saw it so I checked it out. The beginning of the movie was rough, especially with that horny principal. I was thinking, "What was Gabrielle Union thinking trying out for this one? This is worse than those cheerleader movies." But then the characters were so ridiculous, from the teacher cursing everybody out to Keegan's character, Joey, being beyond vain. Julia Stiles is cool, and I liked that she was rebelling against the normal. I figured I had the movie now. May as well give it a shot. And it picked up. Was it ridiculous? Absolutely. When Joey drew a penis on the side of that one guy's face, I knew this movie was going to have plenty of laughs. And it did. But in between the laughing was a story about a girl who had a deeper reason for rebelling, which I'd already guessed as soon as I saw the two interact.

The summary is basically that Bianca wants to be a popular teenage girl who dates. Her father won't let her date unless her sister, Kat, dates, too. Since Kat (Stiles' character) seems to be completely repulsed by teenage boys, that'll be a challenge. But when Joey pays Patrick (played by Heath Ledger, whose name I knew but I'd never seen him in any movies outside of playing the Joker) to get Kat to go out with him, the game is on. The only problem is Cameron (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) likes her, too, so he's trying to get in on the deal. A bunch of confusion happens, and the ending is as predictable as you'd expect. I loved watching Stiles and Ledger interact onscreen though.

Another thing that amused me about the movie was the crazy choices of music. They went from George Clinton with "Atomic Dog" to Salt n' Pepa to Biggie, and then into a bunch of rock songs I didn't know. And Stiles has been watching "Player's Club" because she danced a little too convincing. Pure entertainment. Anyway, great movie that started off rather shaky.

I Love this Movie - Aprilskye - Santa Rosa, CA
Watching Kat (Julia Stiles) and Patrick (Heath Ledger) interact in this film is priceless. Both characters were given great lines, but it is the combination that makes the film for me. One of my favorite scenes is when Patrick is told that Kat apparently likes "pretty guys" and his facial expression is hilarious as he finally realizes they don't think he is. Which is he, of course. It eventually dawns on each of the two main characters that they like the other despite no initial intentions to do so. These awakenings are touching to watch. They each publicly embarrass themselves as they travel towards being a couple, but by the end of the movie I'm convinced they have a future. Whether that survives Kat going to Sarah Lawrence for college I can't say, but I'll bet they have a good time together for the rest of their senior year. This is a movie I can watch over and over again because it is funny and entertaining. It also makes high school look as ridiculous as it is, but yet certainly more fun than my high school years.

  • Surging excitement and one-man heroics fuel this powerful action thriller from the director of The Fugitive and Under Siege. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a fireman whose wife and child are killed in a terrorist bombing and who obsessively tracks the mastermind (Cliff Curtis) behind it, from Los Angeles to Colombia to Washington, DC. The fanatic plans to strike again in Washington…but how? When? Where? In the scramble for answers, one thing is clear: Collateral Damage is a ticking time bomb of suspense.

  • Collateral Damage [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • The stakes are up in the grit and guts department 'cause Schwarzenegger flies across a car windshield and, this time, actually passes out for a minute or two. Then receives stitches. What a drag it is getting old. But not too old 'cause 10 character development minutes later, it's time for some action. Didn't our hero plunge 100 miles into a waterfall in the last movie (not to mention, on director Davis' side, didn't the fugitive hero jump into a plunging cascade as well)? No matter 'cause the basics are universally satisfying. That's not to say there isn't a modern touch here. Schwarzenegger does not fire a single firearm in this movie. Ah, but worry not, action fans, our fireman is very adept at making fires. Not to mention Schwarzenegger does a lot of acting ... with his face. Real acting, less wisecracking. But not so much as to wreck our exploding good time! Collateral Damage is a different Commando yet the same Commando, just older and wiser. (Like 6th Day and T3, there are definite boomer metaphors here. Shall we say the axe proves mightier than the cellphone.) Davis gives this post-911 tale a cool collateral symmetry.

"Damage" to Arnold's Career - Mike Schorn - APO, AE United States
At the time of the release of "Collateral Damage", director Andrew Davis had a pretty good career behind him: between 1985 and 2002, he had done good things for the careers of Chuck Norris (Code of Silence), Steven Seagal (Under Siege), Harrison Ford (The Fugitive), Michael Douglas (A Perfect Murder), and had even directed Tommy Lee Jones to his Oscar. Needless to say, the man knows how to bring out a lot in movie stars, so there were few reservations about his teaming up with the number-one action hero of our time, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Surprisingly enough, the film flopped and threatened to end Schwarzenegger's acting career on a low point before Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines came out. Folks tend to write off the film's lack of success due to the fact of it being released only five months after the real-life terrorist attacks of 9/11, but I consider it a simple matter of Schwarzenegger having played too many characters, having been in too many life-threatening situations, and having acted under too many good directors for Davis to have any kind of moving effect on his style at that point.
Oh, and it's not too great of a movie to begin with.

The story: Gordy Brewer (Schwarzenegger) is a fireman whose family is killed in an explosion orchestrated by Colombian terrorist Claudio Perrini (Cliff Curtis, Sunshine). When the US government fails to dispense justice, Brewer travels to South America to exact personal revenge on the terrorist.

For the most part, the plot is as straightforward as abovementioned, but like many Davis films, it gets political as the film progresses...and this is where I first begin to find fault with the film. Forgive me if I seem less-than-patriotic in this statement, but I am thoroughly tired of the one-dimensional and overgeneralized approach that Hollywood has taken towards terrorism for the past decades: for the most part, "Collateral Damage" is a throwback to the days in which we liked to assume that all terrorism was fueled by blind, unexplained, and unwarranted hatred towards America by faceless devils who hid their horns under berets or turbans. The ideology that American lives are more precious than those of people in foreign countries is strongly enforced here, with only the lamest of attempt of political correctness there to try and balance out the ethics.

As far as action goes, the movie is fairly bland: Schwarzenegger doesn't even fire a gun as he flees from bad guys throughout the jungle and avoids missiles. As a matter of fact, besides throwing a few grenades and engaging in a couple of gritty brawls, he doesn't get in on the action at all, which is limited to run-of-the-mill shootouts and explosions; this qualifies the film as more of a thriller than an action title - something I wish I could have known before purchasing it. Then again, ten minutes into the movie, it didn't really surprise me too much: Schwarzenegger looks much older and greyer than he did as recently as The 6th Day, and were it not for his return to form in "Terminator 3", I would have figured that he was over the hill by the time this film rolled around. Also, there are no witty one-liners or much humor of any kind to fall back on, leaving Schwarzenegger looking less vengeful and more tired than he ever has.

The rest of the cast performs fairly well, though they comprise a less-than-original ensemble. Cliff Curtis is merely decent as your stereotypical Latin military-type, but luckily his prominently-featured wife (Francesca Neri, "Hannibal") is there to cover as a deeper and more complex character. Elias Koteas ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") has an unadmirable role as an underhanded government agent, but John Leguizamo (Executive Decision) and John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) have likable parts to keep the movie afloat during their screentime.

I wish there was more to say, but "Collateral Damage" may just be the most toothless Schwarzenegger vehicle ever. I really don't know how the Arnold/Davis team went wrong, but it's almost for sure that fans of The Terminator will not be fans of "Collateral". Schwarzenegger fans will probably already have this as a part of their collection, but non- die-hards should treat this a rental the first time around.

One more for the fans who can count on no new ones until the Governor leaves office.....if then. It has what his fans want, plenty of action with the good guys winning, and a decent story of a fireman who seeks revenge for the murder of his wife and child by Colombian terrorists. No doubt it will satisfy action fans with other heroes besides "The Big Guy". Not at all bad.

  • A bit slow at times, the glory of this movie is the revelation that Benjamin Bratt is an actor to reckon with. He plays an old school Mexican man, Jay (Che) - from the Pluto in Virgo generation - that is struggling with the new ways of life: his love for a hip and sexy African-American woman, Shell, (played by Cathleen Riddley), the lifestyle of his son who was shot, and the vicissitudes of Mexican American life in San Francisco. Basically, Jay is losing everything at middle age because of his passive aggressive behavior and intolerance, which is why both Shell and his son abandon him. Yet, what you really get is a warm, caring, very down to earth man trapped in time warp that he is very comfortable with. The movie oozes nostalgia for a lost time, a lost way of life, a lost culture, and man's sad attempt to possess anything on this earth. People come and go and time can't be saved in a bottle.

This movie is like a throwback to the early nineties, which was also a time of throwback to the 1970's. Sometimes, you never really comprehend what era your are in. The Soul, Funk, and R& B soundtrack is so cool - a reflection of one of the most memorable, recognizable eras of the last century, again the early 90s. Indeed, it would become the twilight period of the old times unbeknownst to us at the time. There are no cellphones, no computers, no post early 90s gadgets in 99% of the film, which in reflective moments is filled with Native American music that seems to summon from deep within, a salient need to return to one's roots. The love making scene between Bratt and Riddley is utterly tender accompanied by a mixture of Native American and African music fused together with no vulgarity. I was happy to see that though it presents Native Americans in a rather typical light, it shows innate acceptance within the culture itself with all the warmth long ago infused by the ancient Mayans. After his son graduates, the gravity of life hits him. He returns to Shell in tears, real tears. They don't say much if anything. He just gets in his car and drives to Los Angeles where his son is attending college to make amends at last.

This was truly a touching film, a real life story of man who is finding himself .....successfully..... with courage.

its all there - Elizabeth Doerr - Nashville, TN United States
For anyone who loves the real San Francisco, who has a son that's drifting away to a place you dont understand, or has a father who's not there when you want to come home, or who has struggled with demons, or loves old cars, graffiti and murals, who's looking for redemption, this a movie that you'll keep. Peter Bratt's best directing, Benjamin Bratt's best performance.

  • This is a multifaceted story of a multi-verse in which they even took the premise form the immoral. Turns out if you kill your other self in a parallel universe you get to split his chi with your otherness.
So now it is down to two. And the only person Gabe Law (Jet Li) can confide in is his better half T.K. Law (Carla Gugino). At first she hummers Gabe then when she is sure he is telling the truth it is a tad too late.

There is lots of action with kicking, shooting, and blowing things up. Both Gabs by this time are toughies and nothing can stop them. We find that it is impossible to not kibitz.

The question is in the end is there time enough for love?

  • National Treasure(released Nov/04)is an exceptionally engaging film which combines many elements of cyrptology, archeology, symbology, legends and half truths regarding the Masons and Knights Templar and all shaken and stirred into an Indiana Jones "glass".It contains a good solid cast of actors and coupled with Jon Turteltaub's taught directing skills this film is a clear winner.
The story involves one Ben Gates(Nick Cage)whose family has been guarding a passed down secret of a huge long lost treasure for generations. Finally getting a financial backer one Ian Howe(Sean Bean),they travel to the Arctic to uncover a long lost ship which contains a clue. The clue tells Ben the next important piece of the puzzle lies on the back of the Declaration of Independence.Howe tells him that he can obtain the document and this is the moment Ben realizes he has hooked up with the wrong people.A skirmish ensues and the ship blows up leaving Ben and a friend stranded, having to walk to the nearest settlement to be rescued.
Back in New York Ben visits several law enforcement agencies in an effort to alert them of what is coming. No one believes him and he decides in order to protect the valuable document he will steal it himself.Amazingly this is what he does with both the law and Howe on his tail.Mixed up in this is the curator of the the National Archives in Washington Dr.Chase(Diane Kruger). She inadvertently has to go on the run with Ben and they end up at the home of his father Patrick(Jon Voight),who has been a skeptic of the entire legend all his life.Ben finds his code and it makes a now skeptical believer out of Dr Chase also. When his father discovers what his son really has he is beside himself. In order to keep his father out of the situation however they tie him up and leave him just as the FBI shortly thereafter arrives at the house.
Howe is always dogging Ben and company's footsteps as they travel to Independence Hall in Philly. There they find a strange pair of bi-focals with which to view the back of the Declaration. The treasure they seek is under the old Trinity Church back in NYC.The FBI at one point lays a trap for Ben and for his pursuers Mr.Howe, but Ben manages to escape with the help of Howe who now has his friend,Dr Chase and his father captive. They all travel to the Church and discover a huge grotto which they descend. At the bottom is a room with nothing in it.Ben's father tells Howe the next clue lies in the North Tower in Boston, which is where Howe heads leaving the group stranded. However it is a false clue and Ben discovers an ante room which contains the real treasure. It is filled with thousands of years worth of artifacts and history. When the group re-enters the Church above the FBI swoops in.They are looking for fall guys and Ben gives them Howe and his men at the Church in Boston. As Ben wanted, the treasure/discovery is released to a museum in Cairo for the benefit of all mankind.
Once the movie establishes its premise the action seems to flow non stop throughout and the 130 minutes flies by very fast. Not only is the direction here very good, the editing of the film is fantastic and gives a greater impact to those moments which otherwise would have lagged.Cage,Voight,Bean,Kruger,Keitel(as an FBI man),et al turn in very good performances in their respective parts.
The movie is presented in its' widescreen 2:33:1 aspect ratio and the transfer is crisp and clean.Extras include a behind the scene featurette, deleted scenes,an alternate ending, director movie commentary, Knights Templar and "Treasure Hunters revealed" featurettes,an animatic of the opening scene(an animated storyboard)and some puzzle challenges(each special feature has a letter code to it).
All in all a highly recommended action packed film which is suitable for everyone's enjoyment.Made by Bruckheimer's production unit(Bruckheimer himself was deep into the production of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies at the time) and directed ably by Turteltaub, this film won't fail to please anyone.

  • We kept forgetting to breathe! - Bibliophile - Grayslake, Illinois USA
I watched this film with my "8" &"10" year olds and we all loved it! My husband said he thought it was a great movie having seen it previously. We all found we kept holding our breath waiting for the next scene to unfold. Nicholas Cage is one of my favorites and two new actors (to me) are two I will look for! "Reilly" and "Miss Chase". Great! Action packed! A keeper!
